“I expect you in my bed again tonight,” he murmured.

“Fat chance,” I croaked out, barely able to speak. “Don’t you know I don’t follow instructions?”

He shot me a crooked grin. “You’ll be here.”

And with that, he kissed me hard and stood before I had a chance to respond. I watched his tight ass as he walked into the bathroom and closed the door, then I flopped back on the bed and tried to hold back the smile that was fighting to break free. I failed and had to cover my face so he wouldn’t know how happy I was if he came out.

I rolled over and stared out the window at the rising sun. The soft sounds of the shower lulled me back to sleep, and when I woke again, the day had begun, and a note was waiting for me on his pillow.

Chicken for dinner. See you at seven. If you’re not here, you don’t eat, and I won’t eat you.

Some would say that wasn’t romantic, but he was offering me food and orgasms. What wasn’t romantic about that?

“Alright, I’ve been thinking about the whole plane explosion and I think I came up with an idea,” I said, slamming down some folders on Cash’s desk.

He eyed me warily before leaning forward and opening the first folder. “Okay, what’s your idea?”

“Well, I was thinking about how Rafe has been doing shit to help us without us knowing. So, I got to thinking, what if Rafe blew up that plane?”

“With FNG on board?” Cash said skeptically. “How would that help us without us knowing?”

“That’s the thing, we won’t know until he tells us.”

“And…you think he blew up a person.”

I sighed in exasperation. “No, I don’t think FNG was on the plane. I think it’s all a big diversion. I think he wanted us to think FNG was on the plane so he could use him for whatever fucked up mission he has in mind.”

“That’s going a little far, even for Rafe.”

“Really? He set up an innocent woman to take the fall for his theft of the body in the truck the night of the explosion. He called the police on Leah for aiding and abetting Tahlia. And he did all this in the name of his cause.”

“And helping out others,” Cash added.

“Precisely. Who’s to say that he’s not doing the same thing with FNG?”

He thought about it a moment, then looked down at the folders I’d gathered, each with the intel on each of the individual cases. It would be so much faster for him to go through it on the computer, but Cash was old school. He liked being able to literally close a file after a case was finished and then stick in his filing cabinet.

“I don’t know. It’s a stretch.”

“I know,” I admitted. “And I’m not saying I’m going to keep digging. I know we have to follow the leads, but it’s something to keep in mind for the future.”

He gave a tight nod and closed the file. “I’ll take it into consideration when the time comes.”

I wasn’t the type to say thank you, so I turned to leave, but he stopped me.

“One more thing we need to discuss.”

“Yeah?”

“I know you’re close with my wife.”

I cocked an eyebrow at him. “I wouldn’t call us close. Although, I suppose I tolerate her better than other women.”

“Either way, that may lead you to do things for her you wouldn’t normally do.”

“I disagree. I don’t do favors for anyone.”
