“Thereisone more stop that we could make.” Ranger raised his eyebrows as his statement hung in the air.

“Where’s that?” Duke glanced at Ranger, curious as to what he was thinking.

“We’re going to pass Henrietta’s old house. It’s about a mile off the highway. It might be worth looking at. Last I heard, nobody’s living there now.”

Duke and Andi exchanged a glance before they both nodded.

“That sounds like a game plan,” Duke said.

But as Duke pulled away, he glanced around once more. Could the killer be someone they’d talked to today? Joe Prospector probably wouldn’t have had a chance to leave this message on the vehicle without being spotted.

Who else did that leave here in town?

Skeeter?

Duke didn’t know. But for now, he headed toward Henrietta’s old place, curious about what they might find there.

As Duke pulledto a stop in front of an old house, Andi glanced out the window.

It wasn’t the first time she’d visited the scene of a crime. She’d done it on numerous occasions as an attorney.

But something about this felt different. She wasn’t here in an official capacity.

She was here as a matter of survival.

The killer hadn’t made any more moves. He’d left that message on the window in Coldfoot, but he could have done something more sinister or deadly.

Then again, theyhadbeen out in public. It would have been risky to make any overt threats.

Had someone been following them all day? Or had this person happened to see them here in town and decided to send a message?

Andi had so many questions.

Duke cut the engine, and they all climbed out into the snow. The driveway hadn’t been cleared, so it would be a trek to get to the front door.

Despite that, the house in front of them looked amazing, like one of those homes you’d see on a postcard. It was a big log cabin with an expansive porch and three chimneys. Snow covered the metal roof as well as the trees around it.

It was hard to imagine a tragedy had occurred in such an idyllic place.

But it had.

“This has just been empty for three or four years?” Andi glanced at Ranger, waiting for his confirmation.

He nodded. “That’s my understanding.”

Andi let out a sigh. “It’s a shame this beautiful house is being wasted.”

Before anyone could stop her, Andi climbed through the snowdrifts to the porch. She fully expected the front door to be locked.

But when she twisted the handle, she was surprised to feel the door unlatch.

With only a small glance back at Duke and Ranger, she pushed it open and stepped inside.

In doing so, she felt as if she had stepped back in time.

The place, even though it had been abandoned for several years, still looked homey. Handmade quilts were draped over the couch and chairs. Some dried flowers rose from what appeared to be a homemade wooden vase. Hand braided rugs stretched across the wooden floor.
