This had been a place of happy memories.

Until it wasn’t.

Andi frowned as she walked toward a huge stone fireplace in the distance. She wondered if these stones had been taken from one of the nearby streams. It looked rustic, and wonderful.

Two bookcases flanked either side of the fireplace, and pictures of the family were all over the shelves. Maybe she shouldn’t, but she pulled out her phone and took some snapshots of them.

She wanted to remember she was fighting for someone other than herself.

That was the way that she’d always been. Doing things for herself didn’t bring her very much satisfaction. But helping other people made her feel a sense of unmistakable purpose.

She closed her eyes a moment and imagined Henrietta being here straightening the house when someone came to her door.

The person had come inside.

It had been quiet. The kids hadn’t woken up.

Did that mean Henrietta had welcomed someone inside? Did she know the person? There had been no signs of forced entry.

Then right here in front of the stairway, Henrietta had been stabbed and left for dead. The front door had been open when Henrietta’s friend stopped by and discovered her.

“It’s clear,” Duke said as he joined her and tucked his gun away.

Andi had been so entranced, she hadn’t even heard Duke and Ranger come inside.

She paced to the other bookcase, still soaking in details about Henrietta’s life.

That’s when she saw something that made her blood freeze.

A bobblehead doll.

Except this one was no angel.

It was the devil.

And blood was spattered across the figure.

chapterforty-two

I stoodin the woods and watched them.

As I did, I leaned down and scooped up some snow with my gloved hand.

Now wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Another favorite from my childhood.

And what would wash me as white as snow?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

I’d done bad things. Now I needed to be washed of my sins. I could only accomplish that by eliminating those who threatened to blemish my reputation.

Theywere the sin.

I’d hoped it wouldn’t come down to this. But these people wouldn’t leave me alone.

Just like Craig wouldn’t drop his investigation.
