Before he could respond, an explosion rocked the building.

Duke jumped to his feet as alarm raced through him.

What had just happened?

* * *

Andi didn’t care that Duke had just yelled for her to stay there.

As he headed toward the door, she was right behind him.

They quickly threw on their shoes and coats before rushing outside and pausing.

An above-ground gas tank at the side of the building was engulfed in flames.

“What the . . . ?” Duke muttered.

“How did that even happen?” Andi froze and watched the flames as they warmed her skin. “What do we do?”

A fire extinguisher wouldn’t be enough.

“Call 911,” Duke called over his shoulder. “Then I need you to go inside and make sure everyone’s okay. They need to be up in case this fire spreads. Let’s just hope the flames go out on their own.”

Andi called and reported the fire. She didn’t want to leave Duke out there alone. But Duke was right—she knew she needed to warn people.

Most likely, they’d heard the explosion. But she needed to be sure.

With one more glance at Duke, Andi hurried inside. She had to make sure everyone stayed safe.

But one question wouldn’t leave her thoughts: Had this been an accident?

She already knew the answer.

Most definitely not.

Duke ranto the other side of the tank as flames shot from it.

Just as he reached the back side, a shadow lunged from the darkness and nearly knocked him over.

A stabbing pain shot through his shoulder.

“This is all your fault,” someone hissed over the roar of the fire.

Duke jerked around, ready to fight.

A masked man held a knife in his hand, raised above his head, about to strike again.

Duke ducked out of the way.

As he fisted his hands in front of him, the pain in his shoulder intensified. He had to push through it. His life might depend on it.

“Why are you doing this?” Duke growled.

The man only grunted and sprang at him.

Duke blocked him and used momentum to throw him back.
