She only had questions, and no answers.

She frowned as her neck ached, a reminder of her earlier accident.

She should be almost back to Fairbanks by now.

But that wouldn’t be happening. Not tonight.

This whole situation was getting complicated.

She’d come to Alaska for one purpose and one purpose only.

Tonight’s events could derail her plans.

But she couldn’t turn her back on someone who needed help.

She’d never been able to.

And that was what always got her in trouble.

I lingeredbehind a tree in the snow.

That was okay. I’d dressed for this weather. I was warm enough.

For now.

It was a good thing I’d heard them coming.

I’d left right before they’d arrived. I’d watched them step from their vehicle. Go into Craig’s.

They would discover his body.

My stomach churned at the thought.

They weren’t supposed to show up.

This wasn’t in my plans.

What can wash away my sin? What can make me whole again?

Nothing but the blood . . .

I needed atonement.

Now I wasn’t going to get it.

My hands fisted at my sides.

This won’t do. Now I’ll have to make more plans. Take more action.

Especially since the snow machine I’d brought here and hidden in the woods wouldn’t start.

So now I was trapped. It was too cold to wait outside much longer.

I wanted to go back inside and look at the scene again.

I wanted to find those papers!
