I hadn’t expected anyone to get here this quickly. State troopers were notoriously busy. Craig kept his address private. No one should have known where he lived.

Plus, how had these two known Craig was in trouble? Just because he went off air didn’t mean anything.

Panic thrummed inside me.

I breathed in and out, my breath frosting. The cold bit at my nose. Chapped my lips. My cheeks felt dry and stung with wind burn.

What should I do?

My breathing became faster and shallower as I considered the options.

I could run.

But I wouldn’t get far.

Or I could . . .

No. I squeezed my eyes shut as the nagging voice begged for my attention.

Begged for more blood.

Death was the only way out of this.

Right?

Not my death.

Theirs.

I could make sure those two didn’t find anything. They both looked a little too smart for their own good. The man with his deep voice and cocky actions. The woman with her intelligent eyes and spunky attitude.

Their faces were forever ingrained in my mind.

I could silence them.

Permanently.

Just like I’d silenced Henrietta.

And now Craig.

I’d proven I was capable.

I balled my hands into fists as I contemplated my options.

Then I crept closer to the house.

Duke’s musclesstiffened as he sat on the couch beside Andi.

She’d gone surprisingly pale, and he worried she might faint.

A dead body and a fainting woman? That was one too many things for him to deal with right now.

He’d handled situations like that before, but they weren’t ideal.

Like riding a bike, his instincts seemed to snap back into detective mode.
