None of this made sense.

He tried to picture the scene playing out.

The killer pulling the SUV off the road. The state trooper stopping behind him.

Had the killer seen the trooper coming and hid?

Had he watched as the trooper found the note and the bobblehead? Maybe having someone else show up here had thrown the killer off guard.

Maybe he’d felt desperate, and that’s what had led him to kill again.

But there was only one set of footprints.

Duke frowned as he continued forward.

Had the killer murdered the state trooper and then carried his body through this field?

Why would he do that?

But if that were the case, then the man would have to be strong. Duke didn’t see any drag marks.

He didn’t know how big Trooper Bosch was, but it still wouldn’t have been easy, especially with the thick snow.

He glanced around.

If the man hadn’t gone to the trading post, then where would he have gone?

The questions continued to churn in Duke’s mind with no answers as he followed the prints.

Several feet later, the tracks stopped at an old shed.

Duke stared at the structure a moment, bracing himself for whatever he might be about to find—or encounter.

“I’m so sorry about Craig,” Andi started as she and Simmy remained near the doorway.

Andi still held her gun, but she had taken off the snowsuit so she could at least move freely.

She didn’t want to make Simmy nervous, but keeping her friend safe was more important than momentary anxiety.

Andi had only pulled the trigger on someone once before. And it had been a regretful mistake.

But she’d do it again if she had to.

Every time Andi remembered Craig’s dead body, the urgency of this situation hit her full force.

A killer was out there, and she had no idea what he was planning next. She had to remain guarded, ready for action before someone else died.

“I just can’t believe Craig’s gone.” Simmy shook her head. “It doesn’t seem real.”

“I know. Someone was desperate to silence him.” Andi paused as she considered her words. She wanted answers, but she also needed to remain sensitive about the situation. Craig could have been Simmy’s dad, after all. “Craig never hinted at whom it might be? Never told you what he’d discovered?”

Simmy shook her head. “I didn’t ask. I figured he took too much delight in revealing it online, in keeping the secret.”

“Do you know if he toldanyone?”

Simmy pressed her lips together in thought. “I know he told me once that the police didn’t want to listen, that they didn’t take him seriously. I don’t know if he gave up on telling them or not. But nothing ever came of it.”
