Andi made a mental note to figure out which police officer he may have spoken with.

Wait . . . what was Andi thinking?

She wasn’t investigating this case. She’d come here to find evidence againstVictor. She couldn’t allow herself to get distracted.

But distractions made up life, and detours were inevitable.

Besides, she was now in danger.

She had to find this killer before he found her.

Her thoughts drifted to Duke, and she glanced at the door.

Was he okay out there?

Andi wished he’d let her go with him. What if the killer confronted him? What if Duke was in trouble and needed help?

Hadn’t anyone ever taught him about safety in numbers?

Andi licked her lips as she contemplated how long she should wait before she checked on him.

Just then, the door flew open.

A chilly wind, along with stray snowflakes, invaded the area.

Andi turned toward the door and gripped her gun.

She hoped to see Duke step inside with an update about how this all was merely a misunderstanding and everyone was okay.

Instead, a half man, half beast stepped inside.

Andi gasped, and the gun trembled in her hands.

Was this the killer?

Had he come to silence them permanently also?

Duke grippedhis gun more tightly as he approached the shed.

One of the doors wasn’t closed all the way.

What was inside there? Was the killer hiding out?

Duke knew there was no chance law enforcement would get here in time to help.

If this guy was going to be found, it was up to him.

Using his foot, he nudged the door the rest of the way open.

The wind caught it and slammed it into the side of the building.

Duke crept closer, remaining on the edge. He braced himself for any surprise attacks.

But none came.

He quickly searched the interior of the small building, but he saw nothing other than some snow shovels, gasoline cans, and bags of sand.
