The next instant, someone lunged at her.

Tackled her.

They landed in the deep snow.

She gasped as the drift covered her, practically burying her.

Her gun flew out of her hands.

She scrambled to find it, panic consuming her.

She had to get to it before this guy did.

Had to pull the trigger.

Had to stay alive.

“Who are you?” the man demanded.

She froze. She recognized that voice.

“Duke?”

“Andi?” he muttered.

Duke pulled himself up before grabbing her arm and lifting her to her feet.

Andi shook the snow from her snowsuit, feeling colder than before. This weather gave new meaning to chilled to the bone.

“Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Duke stared at her, something primal flashing in his gaze.

A spark of anger ignited inside her. “I came out here to help you!”

“I told you to stay inside! It’s a good thing I didn’t shoot you.”

Her hands went to her hips. “And it’s a good thingIdidn’t shootyou. I’m sorry I was worried that a killer may have finished you off. Next time, I’ll just let you die out here.”

Her Texas twang was strong right now—very strong.

And she didn’t care.

They stared off at each other, something nearly electrifying passing through their gazes. Time seemed to freeze for a moment, and neither of them spoke.

Finally, Duke relaxed his shoulders. “Look, maybe we should just get inside. I don’t like Simmy being alone.”

“She’s not alone. She’s with Ranger.”

Duke stiffened again. “Who is Ranger?”

“He’s Simmy’s friend. He’s at the trading post now.”

Duke muttered something under his breath. “I’m liking this situation less and less all the time. Let’s get back inside.”

“I need to find my gun first.”

But Duke already had it. He handed it over.

“How did you . . . ?” Andi shrugged. “Never mind.”
