The man was an enigma.

Bossy tour guide aside, the man had some skills.

chaptertwenty-six

I shouldn’t have donethis.

But I’d had no choice. The walls were closing in.

Then there was the trooper . . . he’d gotten in the way. Had wanted to ruin my plans.

So I’d had to take more drastic measures.

I paused in the woods, a good mile from the trading post. I leaned against a tree as I tried to gather my wits.

Then I closed my eyes, ignoring the trooper as he moaned behind me on the snow machine.

I needed to calm myself. To focus my thoughts so I could make good choices.

Another song from my childhood began to play in my head.

“It Is Well with My Soul.” It had always been one of my mom’s favorites.

It reminded me that in turbulent times, God’s peace could surround me.

I needed that peace now.

Things were escalating. None of this should have happened. First, Craig had begun digging into the past. Then those other two had shown up.

They were going to be trouble. I could sense it.

I let out a long breath.

“Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,” I sang softly. “It is well, it is well with my soul.”

I knew God was with me. He would provide.

I just needed to keep my eyes on Him.

He would help me to find that deed.

And He would silence my enemies.

A picture of that man and woman I’d seen inside Craig’s place filled my mind.

My enemies.

I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. Exodus 23: 22.

God’s promise to me.

I just needed to trust Him.

I opened my eyes and glanced at the trooper bleeding on the snow machine.

I needed to get him out of here.

Then I would figure out my next steps.
