She couldn’t just sit here! He might need help.

For a moment, Andi wished she still believed in the power of prayer.

But no more.

If she was going to get through this, it would only be by her own strength.

Andi pulled on her hat and gloves, zipped up her heavy coat, and drew in a deep breath as she reached for the door.

Just as she tugged on the handle and pushed, a gust caught the door and thrust it open.

A twenty-below-zero wind attacked any exposed skin.

She quickly plucked the frost from her lashes and forced her eyes to remain open.

Then she slid from her truck. Her boots crunched on the frozen tundra beneath her, and fresh snow drifted almost to her knees.

She glanced around. Her rig was well off the road, angled down a slope from the highway.

Andi frowned. But she was grateful the truck hadn’t tipped over completely and that the trailer was empty, without any type of hazardous material.

She’d have to deal with her truck later.

Right now, she needed to make sure that man was okay.

Terror continued to tighten her lungs, making it hard to breathe.

What was that guy even doing out here in the middle of the road? She hadn’t seen any other vehicles close by. Then again, it was hard to see anything because of the blinding snow.

She’d figure those details out later—once she knew the man was safe.

Please, let the man be okay!

Andi wasn’t even sure who she was talking to as the almost prayerlike sentiment drifted through her mind.

She climbed up the embankment at the side of the road and glanced south.

No one was visible.

She checked along the roadside.

Still nothing.

Just falling snow. As far as she could see.

At once, the truth hit her.

She was trapped in an unforgiving snow globe.

In the Arctic Circle. With no access to help. With zero transportation.

Her boss, Lockjaw, wouldn’t be able to send out help in this storm.

A chill washed through her at the realization.

Andi rubbed her tight throat, willing it to loosen so she could suck in a deep breath.

As she scanned the sea of white in front of her, her throat continued to swell with fear.
