Then she noticed a light behind her.

Was it the man she’d hit? Did he have a flashlight?

Or was that two lights?

Another thought slammed into her mind.

What if Victor had sent someone to find her? What if he’d caused this crash?

He could have set this up to finish her off and make it look like an accident. He was that type.

Evil. Vile. Vindictive.

He destroyed anyone who tried to get in his way.

Quickly, Andi scrambled toward her cab and grabbed her gun.

Then she braced herself.

Coming to Alaska may have been a tragic mistake.

But she would fight for her life with everything inside her.

“I’ll be right back.” Duke pulled a black stocking hat over his ears as he braced himself for the cold. If he was out here too long, he’d need to pull his gaiter over his mouth and nose.

“Wait . . . you’re getting out in this?” Mariella gasped, her blue eyes—adorned with long, fake lashes and thick batwings—widened with fear.

Apparently, her makeup and lifestyle channels werefire. That was how she’d worded it. Now she was trying to shift into the role of travel influencer, hence the trip to Alaska. But an underlying anxiety strained her words and gave Duke the impression that maybe she was trying to salvage something that had been lost.

He hadn’t asked, but he understood the desperation.

“Don’t you need some Golden Days Sunblock first?” she called, her camera raised.

“What?” That girl didn’t make any sense.

“Even when it’s cloudy, you need to be protected.”

“It’s not cloudy outside—it’s dark,” he rushed.

He didn’t want to give Mariella another opportunity to catch him on video, giving a quote about the area. Once, she’d even asked him to grin and wink at the camera for one of her clips. She’d said a face like his was made for the screen.

Duke, however, preferred to live a quiet, private life.

“I’ll leave the heat on,” he assured her. “Stay here while I check this out.”

With his headlights still illuminating the area in front of him, Duke climbed out into the biting cold to see what was going on.

Someone stood on the road.

The truck driver must have climbed from the cab to inspect the damage.

Duke headed toward the figure.

The next instant, the man turned.

No. Not a man.
