"Juicy Asshole?"

Pierce laughs for the first time since Reece set foot in the resort. When he stops, he asks, "Are we really doing this?"

I glance at the time. It's ten to one. "We have the option of backing out. I can go to the restaurant and tell them you're not feeling well, that you've got a terrible case of juicy asshole syndrome. Or…"

Pierce arches a brow. "Or?"

"Or, we have lunch with the CEO of Asshole Enterprises and his husband, who I already feel sorry for, and we make them see how happy and in love we are."

"You'd do that for me?"

I nod. "Of course. I have a plan to make it convincing, too. I'll just say the exact opposite of everything I think about you. For instance, Pierce Owen is the smartest, kindest, and most attractive person I've ever met with a very pleasant body odor that doesn't make me want to gag. See? Easy."

"I hate you."

"And that's why we can make this work." I lean in closer and look him right in the eye. "I hate you, too."

"You're such a jackass," he says before he starts laughing.

I squeeze his hand firmly. "Correct. But I'myourjackass. Now let's go out there and show that dickwad what great taste you have in falling for a wonderful guy like me!"

Talk about worlds colliding.

I'm sitting opposite my ex-boyfriend who dumped me for such a cruel and demeaning reason it sent me into a tailspin I'm still not over a year later, while right next to me, I've got Marnus—the goofiest, funniest, coolest guy I've ever met—who's fast become my best friend and who I'm secretly in love with even though he's straight.

Cluster, meet Fuck.

"So, how did you two get together?" Marnus asks over appetizers.

"Grindr," Reece answers before slurping an oyster down his throat.

"How romantic," Marnus mutters, his smile barely concealing his sarcasm.

Not that Reece would even notice since Reece isn't all that great about picking up on anything that isn't about or directly related to him.

He's already regaled us about how wealthy David, his new husband, is, thanks to some app he developed then sold off for a squillion dollars, how incredible their wedding was—we had to limit the guest list to three hundred, which was practically impossible—and how they're struggling to find a house in L.A. because 'the high-end market doesn't have as many options aspeople like uswould assume it does.'

Honestly, it's hard to remember what I ever saw in the guy. Was he always like this? Does love really make people blind?

I actually feel a little sorry for David. He seems like a nice guy. A little quiet and reserved, and I have to wonder how well he knows Reece, if he's ever seen how careless and downright mean he can be.

"So, why did you two break up again?" David asks, and my liking of him immediately nosedives.

"I don't think there's any reason to get into that right now, is there?" Marnus attempts to steer the conversation elsewhere.

I'm so grateful to him. He's got my back. Despite all our merciless ribbing, I've never once doubted that. He's proven it yet again today.

Despite trusting him, I haven't told him why things ended with Reece. I still haven't processed it myself. Surely Reece isn't that much of a—

"You haven't told Marnus why I ended it?" Reece asks, dangling his oyster fork between us.

"Of course he has. He's told me everything," Marnus lies convincingly, and I hope it's enough to satisfy Reece and move the conversation away from the topic.

"Well, then, you shouldn't have a problem discussing it." Reece turns to face David while my heart rate shoots into overdrive.
