Kat: You are great, baby. You are powerful. You are the strongest person I know. You’ll make it happen!

And then another text comes.

Kat: I love you so much.

I stare at the screen. No one has talked to me like this in the longest time. Not even my dad. The fact that I have someone who tells me these simple words means the world. Kat and I used to feed off each other’s arrogance. It was a double-edged sword. Now we are sharing each other’s strengths.

I text back.

Me: Katura Ortiz, did I tell you that you are amazing?

Kat: What was that?

Brat.

I grin, typing,I love you. Then send another text,There’s a present for you in the closet for tonight.

Presents make her smile, and I want to see all the shades of her smiles.

Droga sent me a text the other day.

She’s worth waking up to.

And a picture: me asleep in my hospital bed, hooked up to the IV and heart monitor. Kat is next to me in her clothes on top of my sheet, halfway over me like she always is, her hand on my chest. I know she’s asleep in the picture but totally invading my hospital bed.

That picture beats all the ones before. Soon, I’ll need a photo album for us. These pictures are getting cuter by the day.

There’s a knock at the door, and Amir pops in. “Are you ready?”

His eyes don’t leave me as we approach the door of the conference room.

“Just so you know”—he places his hand on my shoulder—“despite what my father’s opinion is, or others, I am with you a hundred percent, Archer. You have my support.”

There are quite a number of people lately who support me. The feeling is new, and though most people take it for granted, I feel extremely grateful.

ARCHER

“How did it go?”

Kat meets me at the door when I come back to the villa after the meeting, and I’m momentarily distracted by the sight of her. Her hair is loose and styled to one side. Her makeup is done. Jesus fucking Christ, I thought I was getting a wild thing, but she occasionally transforms into this sexy bombshell and takes my breath away.

I can see she’s on pins and needles.

“Great,” I answer, and she throws herself at me and wraps her arms around my neck. “The meeting was a little intense, but I think we’re on the right track with Gen-Alpha.”

But I don’t want to think about that right now, because we have agenda #3.

Tonight is the opening of Kat’s Thai food restaurant. It’s called Bangkok. Kat is super excited about this simple name and even more so about the big party with half of Ayana attending.

I lose my suit and change into jeans and a black dress shirt.

Kat disappears in her closet and comes out wearing the red Givenchy dress I bought her. The gold chains secured over her shoulders hold the loose red fabric that cascades down her front but leaves the sides and the back bare, ties around her waist, and hangs loosely down to her calves with a side slit.

She’s sin incarnate. I’m speechless. She stands on her tiptoes and turns around, showing herself off as she bats her eyelashes at me.

I want to fuck her against the wall, bang the shit out of her, screw our brains out until we’re sweaty and panting and naked on some surface of this house we still haven’t fucked on—there’re only a few options left.
