“You alright?” I ask.
She is not.
“I need to go for a walk,” she whispers.
In a moment, she’s gone.
Pushkin gives me a guilty stare like it’s his fault, and when I walk into her room to see what happened, my heart sinks.
The beautiful gothic painting she’s been working on is splashed with bright yellow paint, some of it dripping down, a trail of yellow leading to the bottle on the floor.
“Shit.”
Pushkin sits next to me, staring at it too.
I pick up my phone and dial the one person I never thought I would.
“Hey, Becky, this is Jace Reed, Lu’s roommate.”
“I know your name and your voice, Jace. What’s up? Is it the end of the world?”
“What?”
“Jesus, it’s the first time you called me. What’s happening?”
“Right. I have a question. You know art, right? How do I remove fresh acrylics from a painted canvas?”
“What, you couldn’t ask Lu?” I keep silent. “Liquid?” she asks when I don’t answer.
“Liquid.”
“If it’s not dry yet, it’s easy.”
And after she gives me instructions, I get to work.

I ruined my work.Ruined! And made an ass of myself in front of Jace.
I circle the blocks around Goldsling Towers for the third time. Bumping into people. Aimlessly gazing around. Talking to myself.
A car honks violently as I cross the street, braking only a foot away from me.
My mind is a mess.
Quiet salesman, my ass.
Anger flares in me for a second, lacing with excitement.
I actually like the new Jace and wish I knew his secrets sooner. I wrote about them inSharki,thinking that my creativity was wild. Emily, the main heroine, was turned on by John’s dark past. But I’m upset about Jace keeping things from me.
That’s the difference between fiction and reality. Fiction bangs it out with sex. Reality hurts.
I buy ice cream and sit on a bench at the park, overlooking the river.
