My breath hitches in my throat in confusion. “You are not mad at me?”

“It was a coincidence,” Roey says. “I made you room with her. I was briefing him on our progress, but he cut me off when I was about to give him the details, including the name of our lead, and told me to deal with it. Miller somehow missed the connection. That’s our fault, too. I understand why Gordon is mad about you being so close to his daughter. It’s not professional. But the truth is, we didn’t know who she was until today.”

“Right,” I murmur, a thousand pounds lifting off my chest at his words.

“It’s entirely my fault. I didn’t check her info properly. He doesn’t want us on the assignment? Well, we still need to get our expenses back and pay the Eastern-European surveillance team. So we keep working on this.”

“You mean—”

“We are going to find Reznik and get paid by him.”

“What?!”

“Yep. The guy stole a lot of money. If we don’t get paid by the first client, we find a new client. We’ll get paid by Reznik for whatever he wants us to do.”

“You are not serious.”

“Dead serious.”

“We don’t make deals with criminals.”

“We’ve made numerous deals with criminals before, Jace. We find people and get paid. We are not involved in right or wrong. And that’s what we are doing. Our client is not Seth Gordon anymore. It’s Anatolyi Reznik. He just doesn’t know it yet.”

“Roey, we can’t cross Seth Gordon or go against him. I don’t want enemies, and I don’t want to upset Lu, considering he’s her father.”

I’m trying to process the info when he says. “So you are banging the former client’s daughter. Your first time and a jackpot.” He snorts.

“I’m not banging her.”

“Yes, you are. I can fucking tell by your voice.”

“That’s not—”

“You know, Lucy Moor has been a strange mojo from the beginning.”

“She has nothing to do with this.”

“She haseverythingto do with this.”

“Then that’s the way it is!”

“You are fucking in love, Jace.”

“Yes.”

“Oh, yeah? You are not even denying it?”

“I’m not denying it, Roey. You’ve known it for a while. And I don’t give two shits about Reznik or Gordon anymore. But I do care about her.”

“Wow. First pussy, and you are ready to give up five million dollars for it. Expensive. Except Daddy just fired us and we still need to find our new client.”

He sounds bitter. I am angry. But it’s my fault, and it was his paycheck too, and Miller’s.

“I’m sorry, Roey. I can use my savings to pay off the Eastern Europeans and the Reznik expenses.”

He exhales into the phone. “It’s alright. It’s not your fault. And it was my idea to set you up with Lucy. So, chill. I’m glad you are not giving up on her.”

“Not a chance. The rich asshole can suck it.”
