LU

I’m in shock.Yes. Positively.

Or angry?

No, not angry, but I can’t process what Jace just told me.

He’s silent after he finishes his story about my father. His employer? And Uncle. Wanted by the FBI and my father! And the bracelet with the nerve agent. Is this even real?

I close my eyes, trying to piece together the story in my head.

The little courtyard between the residential buildings that we pulled into is empty but feels too noisy. My mind definitely is, reeling and trying to come to terms with what I just heard.

“A target,” I murmur. “I was an assignment. A Brooklyn assignment, huh?”

“Lu, it started that way but soon became different.”

I sit on the bench, and Jace sits on the ground across from me, his knees raised, his back against the pole of a kids’ swing. His eyes are a world of emotions that mirror mine. He’s so humble that I can’t bring myself to say anything bitter.

“I didn’t know he was your father,” he says for the dozenth time.

“But I was an assignment.”

“At first, Lu. At first!”

“How much do you know about me?” I ask, feeling more vulnerable than when I learned he knew my SD pen name.

“Everything that was on your phone. Not me, Danny Miller, another partner of ours.”

I feel so exposed. “And the bug?”

“I removed it after several days.”

“My computer?”

“No.”

“What else? What else, Jace? What else are you hiding from me?”

“There’s a gun in your apartment.”

“I know that.” I feel bitter. “Thanks for telling me now.”

Iwantto lash out, but the anger drowns in helplessness. There’s so much I don’t know about my biological father.

ShouldI send Jace away and tell him I don’t want to see him? A second-act breakup is the rule for romance books.

But I don’t have it in me. I’m in love, and I wish I didn’t feel that there’ll come another day with yet another lie.

“I’m sorry, Lu. It was wrong. But it was an important assignment.Wasan assignment until…”

He rubs the back of his neck and closes his eyes like he’s collecting his thoughts.

“Until?” I ask him quietly though my heart beats like a drum.

He opens his eyes and looks at me. “Until I started falling for you, and everything else wasn’t relevant, because all I wanted was to be near you, with you, and not think about the fact that we met because of someone’s shady deal.”
