His gaze is so vulnerable that I have to make an effort to take deeper breaths.

“Was Pushkin a setup too?”

His desperation-filled eyes widen in momentary shock. “What? No. No. No.”

I chuckle nervously. “At least someone is not in on the lies.”

Can I blame him for how we met? Not really.

“You shot me…” I say echoing my thoughts.

“Lu baby, by accident. I never miss. I… I didn’t miss.” He smiles vaguely.

A silly smile flickers on my lips. “Like a Cupid with an arrow, huh?”

My smile grows.

Heisa freaking Cupid. Shot me with some potion that made me say crazy things, write sexy stuff, and have the most inappropriate fantasies about a man I barely knew. Also, cook him dinners and wear his pineapple underwear. And eventually, fall in love with him.

“I’ll have to tell Becky,” I say.

“What doesshehave to do with it?”

“It’s just polite, you know.”Nowthe bitterness comes out. “To let people know that you carry a gun license and maybe a gun and—”

“I don’t carry a gun,” he argues and adds quieter, “right now.”

And why do I think it’s so hot? Because I’m definitely messed up.

His eyes don’t leave me like I’m the last thing he’s allowed to look at before he dies.

“Lu?” He cocks his head like he’s waiting for forgiveness. “Please, don’t take this away from us.”

Us. He knows how I feel. Then he should know that I won’t do that. Just the thought of not having him around is painful.

My biological father threatened to bury Jace. And that’s before the man who makes my heart swell officially became my boyfriend.

Not a chance in hell!

This is reality. I’m willing to deal with this. Because no one has ever made me feel like Jace.

“If you want,” I say quietly, “I can call my—” Father, Jace works for my father, but I can’t get myself to say the word out loud. “—your former employer and tell him to leave you alone. If he wants to have dinner, he’ll listen. If he wants to keep in contact with me, he will.”

“Lu, I don’t want to jeopardize your relationship with your biological father.”

“Well, you wouldn’t have to if you didn’t shoot me.”

“Lu!” His gaze is so desperate that I can’t hold back laughter. I laugh—how ridiculous is that?

“The strangest thing about this situation is that I know you better than him, Jace. I care about you more. I’ll blackmail him. He has no right, no right to tell me what to do and who to date.”

The last word just slipped out, and even though we didn’t talk about it, that’s what we are doing, dating, and my heart leaps at the thought. This is not the time for clarification, but my mind latches on to that word and repeats it endlessly.

Jace’s gaze heats up, and he rises to his feet, comes over, and drops to his knees, then sits on his heels and takes my hands in his.

“Tonight is a big night, Lu. And I’m here for you. Always.”

“I’m just afraid this exhibit will be a failure. Things are… crazy lately.”
