“Wanna make some cash?” I tempt him.

“How much we talking? My wife will kill me. We almost out of cognac, too.”

“If we catch him? Twenty grand.”

His narrowed gaze drills into me. “You high?”

“Yes or no?

Misha whistles. “Yes.”

Alex is suspicious. “And get killed?”

“He doesn’t have any more bullets,” I reassure him. “Or at least I don’t think so. But I don’t know how to catch him. It’s probably a no-go at this point. He’s too good.”

I’m baiting Alex. Oh, fuck yes, I am.

His jaw sets. “You know where you are? We from Brighton. You want action? We got action.”

A piece of advice? Never challenge Eastern Europeans with crazy dares, unless that’s your goal. They don’t have brakes. Nor do they have a notion of red flags. And the sea? True sea devils seem to have no limits, and Alex definitely doesn’t.

“Sit tight,” he grinds out.

I sit Lu down on the bench.

She’s shivering, soaked but smiling at me. I smile back, my heartbeat spiking at the sight of her safe as I run into the cabin and grab a dry towel for her.

“Lu, baby, did Reznik have any other guns on him?”

She looks at me with the desperation of wanting to help but bites her lip. “Not that I saw, no.”

“Alex.” I turn to him. “The guy shouldn’t have a gun anymore. But I don’t know how to stop him so we can get him.”

Alex nods to Dzima. “A shot.” He does one, then cracks his neck and jams a cigarette into his mouth. “I got it.”

The motor roars again. We swerve, making a U-turn, and we are back in the chase.

I pick up the phone and hug shivering Lu with one arm as I dial Roey. “What’s the update?”

“The drone is shot, Jace. We parked and need a moment to start another one.”

“I got Lu.”

“You got her?”

“Yes.”

“Yougother? You meanwithyou?”

“Yes! Yes!Withme!” I kiss her wet head and tighten my arm around her. “I got her. But we are chasing Reznik again.”

“Be careful. He has a gun.”

“And no bullets. Plus, he’s injured.”

“Good. Remember he has the bracelet. You have to figure out the way to get him.”

In several minutes, Alex catches up with Reznik and turns to his friends. “The safety raft! Blow it up! Quick! Now!” he barks.
