Impossible.

All the Omegas participating in the Trials have received clear orders about their suppressants. My pack and I have started taking rut suppressants of our own.And yet…

As soon as she stops two feet away from me, my Alpha nature is already urging me closer.Totakeher.

Moving a step back instead, I fight against my instincts and don’t say a word as I spin around and motion for her to follow. “This way.”

She falls into step beside me, almost tripping again in her haste to keep up.

“I’m so sorry, Prince Kaspian. I—”

“It’s Your Highness,” I snap, struggling to breathe with her scent so incredibly close to me. Turning my head away from her, I focus on the rose bushes surrounding the garden we’re in and the bright green lawns stretching in all directions to the forest at the edge of the property. Anything buther.

“I apologize, Your Highness. I got turned around and then I asked for directions, but I must’ve asked someone who wasn’t quite sure herself. I ended up on the other side of the palace. By the time I realized I was in the wrong place, I was already late.”

“Hmm.”

Unfortunately, the disinterested hum doesn’t stop her from speaking. Then again, it never does. All these Omegas are exactly the same, only concerned with the sound of their own voices and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that is our pack.

“I do apologize,” she repeats. “I—”

“I’ve heard your reason for being late. Let’s just walk, shall we?”

“Wearewalking,” she says.

Even though I’m making a point of not looking at her, I can hear that she’s frowning from the confused tone of her voice. Changing tact from the constant apologizing, she decides to make polite conversation instead, which is just as annoying as the fact that she was late. “The gardens are beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“It must take a ton of work to tend them.”

“I’m sure it does.”

A soft sigh slides out of her. “Well,uh.What else do you enjoy?”

Silence. I truly enjoy peace and silence.

When I don’t answer, she remains undeterred. “I like reading. Do you like to read?”

Yes, which is probably the only reason you’re claiming to enjoy it.

It’s not the first time one of the Omegas has taken my hobbies as their own. Just this morning, one claimed to be an avid astronomer. So, I bit. I started talking to her about it. It took me less than thirty seconds to establish she didn’t know a telescope from a telegraph.

“Look, I know I was late, but I’ve apologized. Have I somehow done something else that has offended you? You’ve barely said a word to me, and we’re almost to the turning point in the pathway. I…I can just head back if you want.”

I sigh, but she’s so interested in the sound of her own voice that she just keeps speaking before I can answer the question she posed. “Is there something I can do to make it up to you? I feel like we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot and—”

“Good God, do you ever stop talking?” I snap.

It hardly ever happens, but I can’t help it, my control slipping just an inch.

An inch too much.

Her scent is fucking everywhere.

Between that and the incessant sound of her voice, I can’t think. “Look, it’s not you, okay? I’m just…it’s been a long few days.”

I finally turn to face her and her scent smacks me in the face and makes the whole thing worse.
