Kaz arches a sharp brow at him, lightning flashing in those onyx pools as he turns his gaze to our packmate. “You do not want to fuck with me right now, Von Damme. I just had my one-on-one with Maddie and we had a very interesting conversation.”

“Yeah?” Wolf shrugs. “What about?”

“You know exactly what about!” he roars. “You told her about Madame Carpenter?”

Wolf has the decency to flinch. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I was, uh, I was a little stuck inside her at the time, and it was kind of an honest moment.”

Kaz stops breathing, his eyes growing to what appears to be the point of pain as he stares at Wolf. “Youknottedher?”

At least he’s not yelling anymore. On the other hand, the hushed tone is somehow worse. So much more dangerous.

Wolf looks him right in the eyes as he nods, not so much of a shred of remorse on his handsome features. “So what if I did? You’re not the only member of this pack, Kaspian. I also took her to the dowager house to do it. I’m not sure if she told you that part.”

“You fucked her, knotted her, in my grandfather’s fucking house? Jesus, Wolf.” He spins to me, breathing heavily as red streaks creep up from his neck to the bottom of his jaw. “What about you?”

I lift my hands to show him my palms. “I didn’t knot her, but I wanted to.”

“You fucking idiots,” he mutters as he paces up and down before he grabs a bottle of whiskey and drinks down a good, long swallow. “We’ve been over this so many times. I warned you not to get attached to her.”

“Well, it’s too late,” I say. “Just fight back against your mother, Kaz. It’s not so hard. You love Maddie. We all do, so tell Mother Dearest that and threaten her with exposing how the whole thing is rigged if you have to.”

Kaz refuses to answer one way or another, pacing up and down with his fists clenched and his chest still rising and falling fast. My temper flares and I jump off my stool, ready to make a fucking stand if I have to.

“We’re not players in this game of yours, Kaspian. We have hearts. Minds. And we know what we want. We also know whatyouwant. For once in your life, stop being a goddamn puppet and do something!”

“A goddamn puppet?” He seethes quietly, eyes flashing as he turns on me. “If that’s what you think of me, then why are you still here?”

“Because I love you, but I won’t stand by and watch you do this. I won’t let the queen be the one pulling the strings in deciding the Omega we have to spend the rest of our lives with.”

“This is what you signed up for,” Kaz snaps. “You’ve known this was coming literally from the day you met me. You knew the Trials would be held in our generation and you knew what a political shitshow it would be.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t know the political shitshow would drop the best goddamn Omega in the world right in our laps.”

“An Omega who shouldn’t even have been here!” he explodes. “If you two weren’t so busy getting your rocks off with her the other night after dinner, I’d have told you, but no. You’ve been so caught up in her that I haven’t had the chance to tell you that she got in bymistake. She’s not the Omega from Cambridge Academy who was supposed to have been selected, so while she’s eligible in theory, she’s not eligible in practice.”

“I wouldn’t have given a fuck even if shecheatedher way in,” I retort. “The point is that sheiseligible and that shewasselected, even if it was a mistake.”

“You’re really not going to back down from this?” Kaz breathes hard as his features tighten and his eyes narrow to slits. “Wecannothave her, Taiyo. What part of that do you not understand?”

“No, Kaspian.Youcannot have her,” I say, then I turn on my heels and walk out with Wolf chasing close behind.

The door slams behind us. As we leave the pack quarters, I haven’t heard it opening again so I know Kaz isn’t rushing after us. Wolf catches up to me, passing a flask he must’ve grabbed while Kaz and I were arguing.

“Drink?” he offers.

I swipe it out of his hand and drain half of whatever the hell is in there, my heart still racing as we leave the palace and head out to the archery field by unspoken agreement. “Thank you.”

“Looked like you needed it,” he comments lightly before he pauses. “I can’t even say that I didn’t mean to knot her. I was caught up in the moment for sure, but I knew what I was doing when I did it.”

“Yeah, I figured as much.”

He sighs. “So, what do we do now? We’re all in love with her. We all want her, and yet we’ll have to choose another Omega.”

My eyes slam shut as I force out words I never thought I would come close to saying. “Wedon’t have to choose another Omega, Wolf.Hedoes.”

“What?”

I don’t blame him for not getting what I’m saying. It’s such a horrible prospect that I wouldn’t have caught the insinuation either, so I spell it out for him. “We could break our pack bonds.”
