“I asked you a simple question,” I retort. “How do you know my name?”

“How do you know Jax?”

My chest tightens from the way she addressed him as Jax. Not Jaxon, or Mr. Edwards. Jax.

What could this possibly mean? Does she know him on a personal level? Business level? When is the last time they’ve seen each other? When did they last speak? Why does she even have a nickname for him to begin with?

“Jax?”

“Well, that’s his name, isn’t it?” she bluntly asks.

“No,” I firmly respond, standing my ground. Her face drops, and her jaw clenches tight. “It’s Jaxon. Jaxon Edwards. You’re here, at his residence, and I live here with him. So, I’ll ask you again.” I hesitate, not looking away from her eyes for even a second. “How do you know my name?”

She dramatically sighs, rolling her eyes at me. “Oh, please. Let’s drop this little act, shall we?” she asks, sarcasm thick in her tone. “You know who I am, and I know who you are.”

“What do you want?”

“We both know that Jaxon is a successful and handsome man. Any woman would be a complete fool to not want him,” she says, hesitating, appearing aggravated. “Are you going to invite me inside or what?”

I laugh, humorlessly.

Her eyes narrow. “What’s funny?”

“I would never invite you inside his house, especially when he’s not here. He won’t be home until later, and I highly doubt he would want you to be in his home or anywhere near it, for that matter.”

“And how would you know how he feels?” she snaps. “He’s inhumane. A true sadist. He’s done things, unimaginable things. He’ll do them to you, too, if he already hasn’t—”

“You need to leave,” I urge, beginning to close the door.

“Don’t you want to know who I am?”

Becoming motionless, I silently stare at her.

“I was a very big part of his life,” she says, lifting her chin. “You can’t deny the fact that you’re dying to know more about me. You must be interested to know what I was to him.”

“Well, I’m not.”

Without giving her another glance, I turn away, closing the door in her face.

Pressing my palms against the door, I remain quiet. Still. Not daring to move a single inch, or make a single sound. With my mind drifting, my head becomes foggy.

She’s real. This whole time, she was real.

“If you don’t care to know about me now, then so be it. Here.”

There’s an eerie silence, and about a minute later, a small piece of white paper slides under the door. My eyes lock on the scribbled blue ink, yet I make no attempt to retrieve it from the hardwood floor.

“My number. In case you change your mind,” she calls out from the other side. “And just for the record, Sasha…He won’t ever be yours.”

Then there’s the faint sound of her heels clicking against the pavement, and a car’s engine roaring to life.

Jaxon Edwards confessed his love for me. He let his guard down and told me how he felt. We have fallen so deeply for each other, and I care so much for him.

I want to give him a chance to explain himself. I want him to be the one to tell me, not her. I just want him to be honest.

After making my way to my room, I place the small piece of paper inside the drawer of my nightstand, spotting the black velvet box.

Just as I reach for it, the screen of my cell phone lights up.
