I quickly nod. “I am,” I reply, forcing a calm stare. “They don’t have veggie burgers here?”

Dropping her attention to the menu, she flips the page, pointing under a section at the bottom.

“They do,” she happily says, laughing as her eyes set on mine. “You’re in luck.”

“Great.”

“He called me earlier today,” she quietly says, her voice trailing off. “Jaxon.”

Looking in her eyes, I carefully nod. “What did he say?”

“Just wanted to figure out when the next family dinner was,” she replies, shrugging. “Mom is planning on having us all get together in a couple days.”

I smile. “I can’t wait.”

Shuttingthe front door behind me, I rest my back against the frame, excited to be home. It’s been such an incredible day and I’ve never been happier. Memories of Jaxon and I from earlier today replay in my mind.

My head feels light, and butterflies creep their way into my belly. His touch, his dominance, everything about him drives me insane. I shut my eyes, embracing the feeling of calm that washes over me, until there’s an unexpected knock on the door.

My heart leaps in my throat, and I am overjoyed at the thought of Jaxon returning home earlier than expected. Pulling open the front door with an eager smile, my stomach drops at the sight of a young woman.

“Hello,” she enthusiastically says, smiling wide. “You must be Sasha.”

I’ve never been caught so off guard. Staring at her blankly, I grip the edge of the door tighter.

“Yes,” I carefully reply. “And you are?”

“Oh, right.”

She laughs, flipping her long, brown hair behind her shoulder with her polished red nails. A devious smile claims her face, while her eyes stare straight into mine.

“First, it’s such a pleasure to meet you,” she says. “I’m Marnie.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY

I’ve never felt so betrayed. My lungs are throbbing, begging me to breathe, to let in a single breath of air. Although, it’s impossible for me to do so.Impossible.

I love you…Marnie.

The sound of his voice is perfectly clear, bouncing back and forth inside my head. Grasping the edge of the door harder, my fingers feel like they’re about to snap.

He said she wasn’t real, that he had never met someone named Marnie. Yet here she is, standing only feet away. The woman he had called out to in one of his dreams.

She’s simply beautiful, and the resemblance between us is uncanny. This is so twisted. This cannot be happening. Shaking my head, I stare at her dumbfounded. What strikes me as odd is the amusement plastered across every inch of her face.

“Are you all right?” Her voice pulls me back to reality, yet I feel as though I’m trapped in a dream.

A nightmare.

“Sasha?”

“How do you know my name?” I ask, demanding.

She arches her perfectly shaped eyebrow, looking at me in disbelief. It’s evident that my unfriendly tone has taken her by surprise.

“Well, I believe the real question here is something entirely different,” she says, her smile turning into a grimace. “Don’t you agree?”
