“Hi, mom.” Jaxon leans forward, without releasing me, and pecks a kiss on her cheek.

“It’s been much too long,” she says to him, and without any indication, she pulls me into a warm embrace.

I’m speechless before hugging her back.

“Hi,” I nearly croak.

“Hello there.” She draws back, smiling with admiration. “I never thought my son would fall in love, or especially become engaged. I am so happy for you both. You are a very, very beautiful girl.”

“Okay, mom,” Jaxon says, while his mother softly laughs in response. “We’re sorry it’s taken so long. Work has been brutal over these last few months.”

She smiles, exposing her pearly white teeth. “Excuses, excuses.”

“I know,” he sighs.

“I am your mother and I have missed you.” With that, she looks at me once more. “You can call me Lucy.”

“It’s really nice to finally meet you, Lucy. I’m Sasha.”

Tension builds up as she looks us over, admiring the two of us together. Jaxon’s grip on my waist becomes snug, and when our eyes meet, he presses a small kiss against my forehead.

“Jaxon!” A young girl’s voice takes us by surprise.

Stepping inside, I feel very displaced. The way these people live is far different than the way I’ve been living, especially for the last few years.

A stunningly beautiful little girl appears in a doorway, sporting a wide smile. Laughter erupts from her as she bolts to where we’re standing, wrapping her arms around Jaxon’s waist.

“I’ve missed you!” she exclaims, beaming up at him. “You promised you wouldn’t stay away for that long.”

“Work has a nasty habit of getting in the way,” he says. “I’m sorry. I’ll try to not let it happen again.”

Her big, blue eyes widen. “Promise?”

“Promise.”

It’s easy to tell how much she loves her big brother, and it’s so touching to watch, until it reminds me that I no longer have a family.

Lucy chuckles, standing beside me. “She adores him,” she quietly says. “They have a special bond.”

“I can tell.”

And I grin, watching them exchange words, practically melting inside. My heart is beyond full.

“Did you get taller?” Jaxon asks her. “You’re almost my height.”

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, right. I am not. You’re a giant.”

“Only six-foot-four,” he mumbles.

Her laughter fills the room. “Like I said, giant!”

Turning to Lucy, I grin. “You have two other daughters?”

She nods. “Yes. Debra and Crystal,” she explains. “Jaxon is the oldest, while Blake’s the youngest.”

“And Debra is getting married?”

“Yes.” She proudly smiles. “It’s going to be a beautiful wedding. Her and Mark, her fiancé, will be returning home from a cruise within the next few weeks.”
