“I love your dress!” she exclaims, shifting her gaze over to Jaxon, appearing confused. “Why are you in a suit?”

“I have a meeting after brunch,” he replies, an edginess in his tone.

“Grumpy.” She crinkles her nose at him, before taking my hand. “Are you hungry, Sasha?”

“Starving.”

“Crystal has been dying to meet you,” Blake explains, nearly dragging me into the house. “Crystal! They’re here!”

Several seconds later, she appears.

With her dark, wavy hair, and her bright, blue eyes, she appears to be Jaxon’s twin.

“Hi,” she happily says. “You must be Sasha.”

“I am. It’s so nice to finally meet you.”

“I’ve heard very much about you,” Crystal says, laughing. “Blake is a huge fan of the two of you.”

“Hey,” Jaxon murmurs, giving Crystal a one-handed hug. “How have you been?”

“Pretty good. I’ve been really busy with school lately.”

“Nursing school, right?”

“Yes.” Crystal dramatically sighs. “It’s complete hell.”

“I want to be a business owner,” Blake announces, sneaking a look up at Jaxon. “I want to live in huge houses, too.”

“It’s very time consuming,” I speak up for him. “He works all the time. That’s why he barely knows how to have fun.” Gazing over to him, his jaw clenches tight. “Isn’t that right, sweetheart?”

“Hardly,” he smugly answers, faking a loving smile. “That’s why we went up to the cabin yesterday and jumped into the lake together in our clothes and shoes, right?”

My heart sinks at the memory.

“Aw,” Crystal sighs, smiling at Jaxon. “That’s so romantic. I didn’t think you had a romantic bone in your body.”

“Hilarious,” he mumbles, sneaking his arm around my waist. It’s much closer than my liking. “Candlelit dinners under the stars, you name it. I’m full of romance.”

Unthinkingly, I step away, and his arm falls to his side. My eyes widen once I realize what I have done. All eyes are on me.

Especially Jaxon’s.

His eyes flash me a silent warning. “What’s wrong, baby?”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you guys in a fight?” Blake asks, her lips quivering. “Is that why you guys won’t kiss?”

Crystal looks in our direction, eying us curiously. “Well, maybe they just don’t like to make out in front of people, Blake. Some couples don’t like PDA. Did you ever think of that?”

“What’s PDA?” Blake asks.

“Physical display of affection,” Crystal informs her. “Some people would rather not suck face in front of others.”

Tension fills the room.

Swallowing hard, I force a smile. “We’re not like that.”
