His ocean blue eyes pour into mine. “And, what?”

My lips part, but I can’t speak.

“Dammit, Sasha—”

“—And you called me another woman’s name.”

His eyes widen. “I did what?”

“You called me another woman’s name,” I softly repeat, and he stands. “Marnie.”

“Marnie?” he questions, the name sounding so strange and foreign coming from his mouth.

I nod.

“You must have heard me wrong.”

“I know what I heard,” I press. “You called me Marnie.”

He steps closer. “I don’t know anyone by that name.”

Liar.

“Honesty goes for the both of us, right?” I challenge him.

“Yes.” He stands. “Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Take care of me. Why did you take care of me last night?”

“You needed me,” I answer, and he flinches. There’s a pained new expression that claims his face. “So, I was there for you.”

He turns away. “Coffee,” he mutters. “I need to make coffee.”

“I’ve already made a pot,Jaxon.”

Facing me quickly, he crookedly grins. There’s a sparkle in his eyes. “There it is. I’ve missed that.”

I stay quiet.

“Well, then.”

He gestures to the door with his hand.

Once we step into the kitchen, the heavenly aroma of freshly perked coffee fills the air, sending my senses into overload. As I grasp the handle of the pot, he keeps me still by cupping his hand lightly over mine. His chest brushes against my back, and I shudder at the warmth.

“That’s not necessary,” he quietly says. “I can take it from here. Thank you, Sasha.”

“You’re welcome.”

I step to the side, and he retrieves two mugs from the cabinet and fills them. “You’ve also cooked breakfast?”

“I have.”

Looking my way, he frowns. “It’s not deserved on my part, is it?”

I stay quiet.
