“Thank you, Sasha.”

Sitting down at the table together, neither of us dare to speak a single word, when suddenly, it hits me.

Jolting in my seat, all the color drains from my face. Jaxon has made it clear that he has never met a woman with the name of Marnie, and that leaves one unsolved mystery.

There’s still one unanswered question.

“That wasn’t all,” I rush out. “You said something else.”

He lifts his head from his plate, his attention now focused on me. “Last night?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“I love you,” I reply, and he becomes still. “You said I love you.”

Leaning back in his chair, he acts as if he hasn’t heard me.

“You said I love you, as bright as day. If I misunderstood you, and you’ve never met a woman named Marnie, then that means you were talking to me.”

Pressing his mouth into a firm, straight line, our eyes lock once more. There’s passion built up within them, creating such a heated moment that I’ve suddenly become breathless. We’ve both become paralyzed to the point where we are unable to speak, to move, to even blink. This is important to me. I need this moment.

I need to know.

“Did you mean it?”

“I blacked out,” he carefully answers. “No, Sasha. I didn’t.”

A sharp breath escapes from me, and I immediately look away from his guarded eyes. “Good.”

“How I acted last night, what I did, that was wrong of me. Allow me to make it up to you. Today is an extremely busy day for me. I have meetings back to back. They’re crucial, or else I would reschedule.”

“You don’t need to make it up to me. It’s fine.”

“No,” he states, leaning forward. “It isn’t fine. Pick out something nice to wear for later.”

“For what?”

“I’m taking you out to dinner tonight, Ms. Pierce.”

With that, he pushes out his chair, and dismisses himself from the table.

The clock strikes eight o’clock.I’m ready just in time, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My black dress ends a few inches above my knees, the elegant gold patterns matching my heels to perfection. My hair has bouncy curls, my makeup is beautifully done. I can hardly recognize myself.

Once I reach the top of the staircase, Jaxon appears at the bottom, and this is the first time I’ve seen him since this morning. My nerves kick in, and a blush settles on my cheeks.

“Sasha,” he murmurs, gazing over every inch of me as I arrive at the last step. “You’re so beautiful.”

Taking in the sight of him, I’m left speechless. It’s baffling to realize the effect this man still manages to have on me. He’s wearing a black, tailored suit with a white-collar shirt beneath, along with a plain, black tie. His dark hair is brushed neatly, and he’s clean shaved.

And those eyes.

Those beautiful, blue eyes.

He remains silent, his expression masked, and from the way he’s staring down at me it leaves my stomach in a knot.
