Vic pulled into the driveway, then got out and entered a code for the garage. The door slowly opened, and she drove inside. He pulled up to the other side as she raised the second door. His truck was a tight fit, but he made it work. Vic lowered the doors.

“It’s better to keep our vehicles out of sight. I’m glad your truck fit,” she said as she opened the door to the house.

“Right.” He followed her through the small laundry area and into the kitchen. One thing he’d noticed today—her shirt wasn’t so baggy. He could see the swell of her breasts and, where her shirt nipped in at her badge on her hip, he was aware of the curve of her waist. She was definitely looking sexy today.

Vic opened the fridge. “Yeah, Rick’s been here.” She went to the pantry. “There’s food in here too.”

Cal walked into the living room. As he’d expected, the furniture was pretty basic. He continued his exploration. There were three bedrooms, each with a double bed and a bedside table and dresser. An ensuite bathroom and two basic bathrooms completed the house.

He came back to the living room carrying a set of clothes for the prisoner and found Vic checking that the sliding glass doors to the backyard were locked. “Everything look shipshape?”

She nodded. “Escareno’ll be fine here. Listen, I’ll take the night shift tonight. All right?”

Cal frowned. She’d be tired from the adrenaline she’d used today, if from nothing else. “You sure?”

She grimaced. “I got this, okay?”

“Sure. I’ll take the evening shift tomorrow, and Banning can take the night.”

“Sounds good.” She put her hands on her hips. “I’d love to go at the guy right now, but I don’t think we’ll get anywhere while he’s still in the hospital.”

“I agree.” He glanced at her stiff shoulders and tense face. “Hey, why don’t you grab a suit and come over to my hotel? We’ve got the whole afternoon to kill, and it has a great hot tub. We can turn on the jets and relax until we have to pick up Escareno.”

She heaved a sigh, looking doubtful.

“Look, it’s probably the last chance we’ll get to relax for a long time. Come on.”

She gave him a half smile. “Okay, it’s a good idea. I’ll text you when I get to the hotel.”

“I’m in Room 217 if you want to change.” He started for the garage. “I promise, I won’t bite.”

She laughed. “Well, if you promise, then.”

Chapter Four

Vic knocked on Cal’sdoor, her heart speeding. Why did this feel so crazy? He was a friend, nothing more. So why the hell didn’t it feel that way?
