“Do you feel like talking about our situation? Are you up to it?”

Her eyes opened. “Yes. What’s going on?”

“They found the mole. He was in your IT department. The young man was helping the cartel because they’d threatened his family. He was monitoring your emails, and he could read all your texts.”

She grimaced. “Why didn’t we think of an IT leak?”

“Right?” He squeezed her hand. “And in other good news, the cartel member that we took yesterday is low-level. He’s more of a gang member. So your boss is fast-tracking his release to prison, where he’ll be able to spread the word that Hector didn’t tell you anything else of value.”

“Thank God.” She breathed a loud sigh.

“I know. That means that the cartel shouldn’t be interested in you anymore, and we can go home soon.” He was both relieved and saddened at that.

“Vic?”

“Uh-huh?” She turned her head slightly to look at him.

“I’m sorry I asked you to consider taking a desk job. I realize now that I was letting my fear for you override the fact that I should respect you as an agent. You love your job just as much as I love mine. It wasn’t fair to ask you to give that up.” He leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. “Will you please forgive me?”

“Of course. I’m sorry that I got mad and left. That’s a bad habit I have, and I need to work on it. When I care about someone, I should stick around and hash things out instead of running away.”

He smiled and held her hand in both of his. “Vic, nearly losing you twice has made me realize something.”

“It has?” She looked into his eyes.

“Uh-huh. Vic, I don’t want to live without you by my side. I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”

She began to smile and cried out, “Ow!”

“Oh, God, honey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you do that.”

She held her fingers to her lips and nodded.

“Vic, what I’m trying to say is, I love you.”

She reached for him as a sob escaped her.

He put his arms around her while she snuggled against his chest. “Honey, Vic, will you marry me?” He held his breath, waiting for her answer. Did she love him too?

He felt her nod. “Yes.” Her arms tightened around him. “I love you, Cal, so much.”

His heart raced with joy. “Oh, God, sweetheart!” He kissed the top of her head. “I knew you cared about me, but I wasn’t sure if you loved me like I love you.”

She drew back and looked at him. “Why do you think I got so angry? I was in love with you, honey. What you said really hurt me.”

He held her tightly again, being careful of her sore shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Vic.” Then he helped her lie back down in bed again. “I almost forgot.” He dug in his jeans pocket. “Remember when I ran that errand?”

She nodded.

He held out a diamond solitaire engagement ring. “I bought this for you that day.”

“Oh, Cal!” She held out her hand, and he slipped it on her finger.

“We can get it sized when you feel better, sweetheart.”

She held her hand up, and the light from the window caught the diamond’s facets. “Oh, honey, it’s gorgeous!”

His heart melted. He loved it when she called him “honey.” He kissed her on the forehead. “So are you, Vic. And I can’t wait until you heal and we can start our lives together.”
