She cupped his face in her hand. “I love you, Cal. I can’t wait to go home, but I’ll miss you so much. I’ve grown accustomed to having you close.”

“There’s always the Justice of the Peace,” he said with a grin.

“Oh, you haven’t met my mother yet. She’s going to want a big Hispanic wedding, so get ready, cowboy.”

He gave a loud, melodramatic groan, and she touched her lips again to keep from smiling.

He looked at the woman he cherished above all else and smiled. “I’d go through hell and back for you, sweetheart, so what’s a big Hispanic wedding?”

She raised her eyebrows and then grimaced in pain. “Let me hear you say that afterwards.”

He chuckled. Whatever it took, he was marrying Vic Quinn. “I love you, Vic.”

She reached for his hand. “I love you more, Cal.”

Chapter Thirteen

Three months later, Vic turned at the porch steps and gazed out at the horses in the pasture. It had been a long drive here to Cal’s family ranch in North Texas.

He put his arm around her shoulders. “Well, what do you think?”

“It’s beautiful! I’m so glad we came. I can’t wait to go horseback riding, and I’m so looking forward to meeting your parents. Your mom sounds incredibly sweet on the phone.”

He gave her shoulders a squeeze. “We’ll ride in the morning, but right now we’d better go inside. Mom has dinner ready.”

The screen door opened as they turned around. “Come on in this house, you two.”

Cal smiled and urged her forward. “Mom, this is Vic. Vic, this is my mom, Cora.”

Vic put out her hand. “It’s great to meet you, Cora. Thanks for inviting me to stay with you.”

Cora clasped Vic’s hand in both of hers and smiled warmly. “We’re proud to have you. Dinner’s on the stove. Come in, and I’ll put it on the table.”

Cal’s father was in the living room, and he reached out his hand. “You must be Vic. John Morgan. Welcome.”

She shook hands with him. “Nice to meet you, John. Your ranch is beautiful. I’m so excited to be here.”
