Even though she and I had had that impromptu duet at the dinner Kim convinced us to attend, I was curious to hear what she was like when she was playing a show of her own. She had the look and the attitude of a musician, and I was sure her stage presence would match.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

She’d dressed for the part and looked amazing as she sat on the bar stool, a microphone in front of her with her guitar on her lap. She looked like she was a star right out of the movies as she played, and I was shocked she’d never gotten a record deal.

I hadn’t known what to expect from her as a solo singer, but it certainly wasn’t the rich, smokey voice that emanated through the room. The fact she’d chosen a playlist of Johnny Cash songs was like icing on the cake. I was mesmerized from the beginning, and she held my attention throughout the entire show.

And I wasn’t the only one, either.

“Isn’t she amazing?” Kim asked as she leaned toward me. “I was blown away the first time I heard her, and she just seems to get better and better each time.”

“I can’t believe she’s not famous yet,” I said. “She’s really good.”

“Exactly,” Kim said. “You should tell her so after the show.”

“We’ll see,” I replied.

I didn’t mind the teasing from the two of them. They clearly had picked up on the way I felt about Krissy. But still, I wanted to tell her that she was incredible up there. And perhaps with the olive branch of the guitar, I would be able to without her feeling defensive.

I decided to put it out of my mind for now and just enjoy the show.

I didn’t want to miss even a second of her sexy, sultry voice.

She had me wrapped around her finger now.

And I was almost relieved she didn’t know that.

Chapter Thirteen

Krissy

“Thank you all, thank you, that’s a night, thank you!”

I spoke into the microphone and held up my hand, hoping they could hear me above the round of applause and standing ovation they were giving me.

I couldn’t believe how fast the gig had gone. It seemed I barely sat down and started playing before I had played through all the tracks and was wrapping things up. A few of the audience members shouted for an encore, but I couldn’t play past the time limit given me as the stage was going to be cleaned for the next act tomorrow.

“I’m flattered, really,” I said. “I’ll be playing at the Mermaid next weekend, why don’t you all come find me there? I’d love to see you!”

There were more cheers as I headed for the stairs.

I didn’t know what it was, but I felt I played a better set that night than any of my performances in Nashville. I didn’t know if it was the new guitar, or that I felt at home on this stage, but it had been pure magic.

A large part of me missed my old guitar. I had spent a long time working for that instrument, and I still seethed with anger every time I thought about what had happened to it. But this new guitar was the nicest one I had ever gotten my hands on, and I had fallen in love with it almost immediately.

It was a quality guitar that was so easy to play. I felt the notes were as smooth as butter coming off each string I plucked. There were no squeaks or screeches from those strings, and I didn’t have to try very hard to prevent them from happening.

With my old guitar, I developed the technique to play without making those rookie sounds., But it was almost as if I couldn’t make this guitar sound bad if I tried. It was so nice, and it felt good in my hands.

But I was also glad to get off the stage once my set had finished.

Not that I felt uncomfortable being the center of attention, but there was a part of me that didn’t like being the one to stand and talk to the audience in the center of the stage.

“That was incredible!” Kim said when I reached her and Andrew sitting at the bar. “I’m so proud of you!”

“You ducked out of there pretty quick,” Andrew told me. “I thought you might give us a little more of a goodnight than that.”

“Sorry,” I said. “When I’m not singing, I like to get out of there pretty fast. I don’t know why, I just feel awkward being the only one up there with all eyes on me.”
