Still, I didn’t want to give the impression that I could be bought with material things. If he was going to be my friend, he was going to have to be nice to me. Not the total jerk of a neighbor that I had to deal with during the week, then the adoring fan on the weekend.

“Oh look! There’s Casey and her husband!” Kim suddenly blurted out, pointing across the crowded room.

I had no idea who she was talking about, but clearly Andrew did, as he also seemed excited to see the pair.

“If you two will excuse us, we’d like to go say hi to them,” Kim said.

“Of course,” Gavin nodded.

“Don’t mind us,” I said.

She all but dragged Andrew behind her as they pushed their way through the crowd to make it to the other side of the room, and I suddenly felt awkward. I wasn’t sure what to say to Gavin. It was the first time I had seen him since the attack, and not only did I feel more composed than on that day, I was also holding the most expensive guitar I had ever played, and it was all thanks to him.

“Can I buy you a drink?” he asked.

Shocked, I wasn’t sure I’d heard him properly.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“A drink,” he repeated. “Can I buy you a drink?”

Suddenly, I felt embarrassed. I wasn’t sure exactly what caused it, and part of me wondered if I had feelings for this man. I did my best to dismiss the thought, and decided it had to be the guitar.

Maybe he hadn’t bought it for me to keep, but instead had just loaned it to me for the sake of being able to keep playing and to make the gigs I’d signed up for. I wasn’t sure if I should say something to him then and decided I was going to ask him about it before the end of the night.

I felt foolish simply assuming he had given me such an expensive gift, and I quickly decided I would give it back to him sooner rather than later.

I was caught off guard, and at first, I wasn’t sure what to say. My instinct had always been to turn down a guy in the bar when he asked to buy me a drink, but there was something different about Gavin. I knew him, and after this past week, I felt I almost owed it to him.

This could very well be a way for him to ask me to give the guitar back – and if he didn’t, I would do it anyway.

“Sure,” I said, surprising myself.

“What’ll you have?” he asked.

“A whiskey on the rocks,” I said with a smile.

“My kind of girl,” he replied.

I smirked. I could hold my own in a lot of ways, I knew that, and I was always happy to impress.

Even if I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to impress him.

Chapter Fourteen

Gavin

I was pleasantly surprised when Krissy agreed to let me buy her a drink.

I’d fully expected her to turn me down, especially since her jaw dropped and her eyebrows squished together in a confused expression, when I asked. I wasn’t sure how to take that. Was she surprised because she really thought I was that big of a jerk?

Did she see it as more than a platonic gesture?

Was she accepting the drink from me, knowing I could take it as more than a platonic or neighborly gesture?

I wasn’t sure, but I had a lot of questions running through my mind as we walked over to the bar and I ordered.

“Do you want to go somewhere quieter?” Krissy asked once she had the drink in her hand. “I don’t know about you, but it seems a lot louder in here now that the show is over.”
