“Good. I still don’t eat breakfast,” I told her. “Some things never change.”

“I’ve seen you eat breakfast,” she teased. “Especially when you’re hungover.”

“Okay, fair,” I admitted. “But it’s rare. Do you still have your coffee the same way?”

“Of course, I do,” she said with a laugh. “Some things never change, remember?”

I giggled, pouring the milk into the mug before adding the coffee and sugar. Erin sat on the couch, and after pouring myself a cup, I headed over to join her.

“So, thank God you showed up today,” I said.

“Uh-oh,” she replied. “What’s going on? Sounds like you might need some expert advice.”

I nodded. “I do. I thought I had this under control, but I guess I was mistaken. So now I need you to weigh in and tell me what you think.”

“Alright, lay it on me,” she said.

I filled her in on the events of the night before, from going to see Andrew and Kim in the audience and being surprised with Gavin being there, to having a drink with him, and then him walking me home.

“He sounds really sweet, actually,” she said.

“I’m surprised that he is,” I nodded. “But it was when we got back to my place that things were weird.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we said goodnight to each other, and, well, I guess I figured he would kiss me. I like got all ready for it in my mind, and just waited for him to do it, but he didn’t.”

“What!”

“He didn’t,” I said again. “He just said goodnight, and that was that. He waited for me to make it into the house before leaving, which I thought was nice, but I really don’t know why he didn’t kiss me. I was sure with the way we vibed during the evening, he would. Like, I really feel our attraction for each other is more than skin deep, so what gives?”

“Maybe he was looking for you to be the one to make the first move?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “He doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy. It’s like he would obviously be the one to make the first move because he’s an alpha male, you know? It’s weird that he didn’t. It just makes me think I’m wrong about him.”

“I wouldn’t go that far yet,” she told me. “There could be a lot of reasons he didn’t make the first move, and most of those probably have more to do with him being nervous or something than him not liking you that way.”

“You think so?” I asked. “He doesn’t strike me as the type of guy to get nervous, especially when it comes to women. I would expect him to be the one to take control. He has a macho attitude.”

“Sure,” Erin said. “But just because he’s got that front put out there for the world doesn’t mean it’s how he feels on the inside. He could be a total ball of insecurity and nerves for all you know. I would just give it some time and see how it goes. Or you could be the one to make the first move when you feel like the time is right. There’s a lot of options here.”

“He doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’s going to have issues like that,” I argued. “But hey, there is a reason why I came to you for advice. You are the expert.”

“And you know I’m not going to steer you wrong.”

“Intentionally maybe.”

We both laughed, and she shook her head.

“It’s been way too long since you’ve had a good guy in your life. That last loser really sucked, so you deserve someone who’s going to buy you guitars and everything. I say play it by ear and see how things go. There’s no rush, is there?”

“No,” I admitted. “I guess not. I just don’t like being in limbo. I don’t like not knowing where I stand with someone, you know?”

“I get it, and I agree, but I feel like if you decide to take the bull by the horns here, you’re going to find out pretty quickly where you stand,” she said.

“You put it that way and I don’t know if I want to find out where I stand,” I told her with a laugh.

“I don’t mean in a bad way,” Erin told me with a smirk. “You’ll probably be surprised with how well things go.”
