I threw open the door with a grin, expecting Krissy to be standing there. My expression immediately changed when I saw it was Andrew.

“Wow. At first, I was going to say that you really do know how to make someone feel welcome when you answer the door,” he teased. “But with the way your face fell, I’m guessing I’m not the one you wanted to see.”

“Sorry,” I said. “I did think you were someone else.”

“Well, if you’re busy I can go, but I was hoping you were down to go fishing,” he said.

“I’m definitely free to go fishing,” I told him. “I’m not expecting anyone. Just hoping the person I thought you were would show up.”

“I see,” he said. “Grab your shit and let’s get going. All you need to bring is your rod. I have the rest of the tackle in the truck.”

“Great,” I said. “I’ve got my rod ready and waiting since I’ve been wanting to make time to go fishing for a while now. Let’s go.”

I grabbed the rod and reel from the corner of my bedroom and headed out the door with Andrew. But I looked to see if Krissy was around as we walked to his truck. I thought I was subtle with the look, but Andrew saw it and called me out on it, too.

“I know who you were hoping for.” he teased. “Sorry to disappoint. If I were you, I’d be really disappointed with my ugly ass showing up at your door when you expected it to be her.”

I laughed. “I’m not disappointed, really. I just assumed that you were her, that’s all. Debating on leaving her a note to tell her where I am in case she comes over later.”

“You could do that if you want,” Andrew said. “I’m not in that big of a hurry to get out there. But kind of, so make sure you write fast.”

I laughed, tossing my rod in the back of his truck before heading inside to grab a pen and paper. I put the note on my door so if she came over to see me, she would see that I had gone out with Andrew and would be back later that evening. I taped the note in place, then I hurried to get back to the truck where Andrew was waiting for me.

“So, you guys seeing each other then?” he asked as I got into the passenger seat.

“Yes,” I said. “And she has a tendency to show up on my doorstep when she wants to hang out. Of course, I do the same to her, so it’s not a problem.”

“Why don’t you text her?” he asked. “Seems like it would be a lot more convenient than leaving notes like it’s the seventies.”

“Funny,” I said. “But you know me. I’ve never been one to rely on technology that way, and I rarely have my phone on me. We haven’t even exchanged phone numbers, so I couldn’t text her even if I wanted to. But, like I said, she tends to just come over and get me when she wants to hang out, and I do the same. If she happens to stop by, she can see that I’m out with you and I’ll be back later. It works.”

“Suit yourself, I guess,” he said with a shrug. “I’d like to think I’m not reliant on my phone, but with Kim, it’s so much nicer to just have that direct line of communication with her. Especially since I’m the one who likes to go out and do the shopping and she’s the one who rarely leaves the complex.”

“I don’t blame her,” I said. “If I could get away with not leaving the complex, I would.”

“But then we couldn’t go fishing,” he told me. “And that would suck.”

“We could stand on the beach. Not sure if we’d catch anything so close to the shore like that, but you know, it’s a thought,” I smirked.

“Very funny,” he said. “I’m not judging. I just don’t understand. There’s a difference.”

“I feel judged,” I teased.

“You’re going to feel a lot more judged in a second,” he said. “Because if I find out you have been seeing each other for a while now and haven’t told me, I’m going to judge the hell out of you as a friend.”

I laughed. “It’s not been very long. A couple of weeks, and we’ve not really talked about being official or anything so I don’t know if we’re to the point of making it public. I know she told her best friend, but I don’t know if it’s common knowledge.”

“And yet you didn’t tell me?” he asked. “Okay, I’m judging.”

“Sorry!” I said. “If I was one of the texting types, I would have told you the moment we started seeing each other. Shit, I would have a status update every hour if I had social media.”

“Okay, that might be a little too engaging,” he said. “I don’t care about your relationship status so much that I have to have an hourly update.”

“Just making sure everyone knows what’s going on,” I said with a shrug.

He rolled his eyes. “God help us the day you get on social media. I think Kim’s on too much as it is. I would hate to see if more people from the complex were on. She would be all about setting up some community group or some shit. Trust me, she’s talked about it more than once already, and the only way I convince her to not do it is because you aren’t part of the group and she’d still have to come tell you what’s going on in person like she already does.”

“Okay, for your sake then,” I said. “I’ll take one for the team and stay off social media for the sake of not having a community page for the bungalow complex.”
