I didn’t know, but the thought of how sweet he was and how much he genuinely cared for me made me want him. I had gotten used to the ache I felt for him, missing having him between my legs whenever he was gone. I couldn’t get enough, and he clearly felt the same.

We had sex practically every single time we were together, and I couldn’t think of a better time to do the deed again than right now.

So, I tossed my purse on the counter and headed right back out the door. I didn’t bother locking it up behind me, and I didn’t take anything with me. It was a great perk of living right next door to the man I was dating, and I was taking full advantage of that.

I bounded across the walkway and out the front gate, then I rounded the corner to walk into his yard. With the identical setup for each of the bungalows, it took just as much time for me to run out my door and to his. I would have simply hopped the fence, except for the skirt I was wearing.

I didn’t want to snag it on a loose wire, so I took the long way around.

When I reached his door, I eagerly knocked. I felt it was polite to give him that much warning, though I didn’t wait outside for long before letting myself inside.

He didn’t lock his door often, if at all. He’d told me that early on when he and I started seeing each other, telling me to come over whenever.

“Gavin?” I called. I didn’t see him anywhere, so I headed for the bedroom.

If he happened to be in the bathroom, I’d simply undress and lay in bed naked until he was finished.

But, to my shock, when I walked into the bedroom, he was on a video call with someone. I had no idea who it was or what they could be talking about, but Gavin nearly jumped out of his chair when he saw me come in.

“Didn’t you hear me knock?” I asked. “Or call your name when I came in?”

“No, I’m on the phone,” he replied, his tone short, almost sharp with me.

“Oh,” I said, uncertain of what to do with myself. He didn’t leave me much time to wonder.

“I’m sorry,” he said to the person on the other side of the screen. “Give me a second.”

He’d caught his chair as he sprang to his feet, and he now strode over to me, taking me by the arm and walking me out of the room.

“I’ll come find you once I have the chance,” he told me.

Before I had time to say anything, he closed the bedroom door in my face.

Shocked, I took a step back. I wasn’t sure what to do. Should I stay there and wait for him to come out of his room? Should I head back to my place and hope he came over when he was finished with the call? What did he mean by saying ‘when he had the chance?’

Confused, I walked out the front door and headed back to my place. I was so lost in thought, I didn’t notice Kim driving over to me until she was nearly at my bungalow.

“You were a million miles away just there,” she said. “Is everything all right? I called out to you when I was back there, but I don’t think you heard me.”

“Sorry,” I replied. “I just had kind of a weird interaction with Gavin, and I’m not sure what to make of it.”

“I don’t mean to pry, but do you want to talk about it?” she asked.

“Do you mind?” I looked at her gratefully. “I don’t want to gossip, but you know him better than me, and you might have some idea of what’s going on.”

“Let’s go inside,” Kim said. “If you don’t mind.”

“Not at all,” I replied, leading the way.

We headed into my bungalow, but I couldn’t stop myself from looking over toward Gavin’s on my way inside. I had no idea what was going on, and it left me feeling uneasy.

“What happened?” Kim asked once we were inside.

“Let me get you some iced tea,” I told her as I headed to the fridge and pulled out the pitcher. “And I’ll explain.”

She sat quietly as I told her how I’d found the note when I got home and how I’d been so happy, I dashed over to Gavin’s place to tell him I’d go with him. But, how he had risen from his seat and walked me right out of the room as though I was a child who had intruded on his private space.

“It really reminded me of when I was a kid, and I went into my parent’s bedroom when I wasn’t supposed to. My dad would get up, walk me out, and close the door in my face like that. I don’t know, it really hurt my feelings that he would do that to me. I thought I was special to him or something.”
