“Is he alone?” I asked, halfway hopeful that he wasn’t.

“Yes,” Erin said. “And he looks pissed off. Though that’s not any different than normal.”

“Damn.” I give her a small laugh, though pain ran through my heart when she said he didn’t have anyone with him. I could have put money on the fact I knew Gavin wasn’t going to come with him, but I always had a little hope that some miracle would bring him back to me. It was crazy, and it felt even crazier now that he didn’t come back with Neils, but there was still that hope.

“How did it go?” Erin asked for me when Neils arrived. “Did you talk to him?”

“Yeah,” he said with a shrug. “I don’t think he would have opened the door if he knew it was me on the other side. He seemed caught off guard and went on the defensive immediately.”

“Oh no,” I said. “What did you say?”

“I told him the facts,” Neils said with another shrug, “It’s up to him now to do what he wants with those facts, but he can’t say he wasn’t informed of the decision he’s making as he makes it.”

Erin and I exchanged a glance, and I wished I knew more details. But I knew Neils well enough to know he wasn’t about to spill the beans on what they were just talking about. He would insist that it was private, and even though I desperately wanted to know where Gavin was in his head, I knew I had to respect that.

It was the same thing our fight had been about in the first place, and I didn’t want to go back on my word. I wasn’t a gossip, and I really didn’t want to gossip about Gavin, even if it was killing me not knowing what was going on.

“Thank you for talking to him anyway,” I said. “I don’t know what I thought was going to come of it, but it means the world to me that you guys all love me enough to do this. Really.”

“We’ll see what comes of it now,” Neils said, taking a seat at the table with us.

My little niece and nephew were still playing happily in the kids’ area right in front of us, and Erin turned to her husband to tell him they were going to be staying at the hotel that night.

“I figured we’d stick around for a few days to make sure Krissy is good and doesn’t need us. You know how it goes when you want your best friend, and they’re not around,” she told him.

“Did you get us a room already?” Neils asked.

“I figured you’d want to with the way you feel about hotel suits,” she said.

“I’ll get us one now,” he replied as he pulled out his phone. He rose and walked away from the table to make the call, and I tried once more to convince Erin that it wasn’t necessary for her to keep her whole family here to hang out with me.

“I already told you we’re staying,” she said with a grin. “I know you don’t need us to, but we’re going to because we want to. I love you, Neils loves you, and we’re seeing you through this. Besides, I want to see you perform on stage tomorrow night. You’re going to be great.”

I sighed. “Way to up the pressure.”

“That’s what I’m here for,” she said with a smirk.

I smiled.

I wasn’t sure if her being here was doing anything for my broken heart, but at least she was making me smile.

And right now, that’s what I really needed.

Even if it was forced.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Gavin

I did my best to ignore the phone for most of the day after a video chat with my therapist Andrei who had told me before to call him at any time.

I sent Kim a text that morning when she asked me how things were going, but that was all. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, and after spending the night stewing over what Neils had said to me, I didn’t want to text anyone, either.

I just wanted to be left alone.

So, I was thoroughly annoyed when there was a knock at the front door.

I wasn’t sure who to expect. After opening the door yesterday, to the surprise of Neils standing right outside, I was ready for just about anything. I didn’t want to talk to Krissy, but I figured the conversation with her was coming whether I wanted it to or not.
