“Who knows, city slicker.” He winks at me, his playful side coming back. “Probably because he doesn’t want to scare you off.”

“He couldn’t scare me off if he tried. Pretty sure he was trying there for a while.”

That gets a good laugh from Wells.

“Yeah, I think he was, too. But only because you scared the shit out of him.” Betty gets up and slowly moves over to Wells, sniffing his pant leg before lying down next to him instead.

“I scared the shit out of him? He was the grumpy one! He was such an asshole.”

“Yeah,” he says, laughing. “He was. But that’s just Rhett. And you’re the first girl that’s made him do a double take since the divorce. He’s never dated, never slept around, never evenlookedat another woman ’til you popped into the picture.”

My ego and my heart inflate.

“Yeah?”

“Okay, don’t go lettin’ it get to your head,” he teases. “Keep bein’ good to him. He’ll get his head out of his ass one of these days.”

“I know you aren’t talkin’ about me.” Rhett’s voice comes from the front of the barn, and when I look up, I’m greeted with the lovely sight of his strong body leaning against the doorframe. The sun’s behind him, outlining his muscles and cowboy hat. He’s a wet dream come to life.

“Would never dream of it, brother,” Wells says, slowly getting up. Betty walks back to her bed in the corner and plops down with a huff. “Good talk, city slicker.”

Rhett walks through the barn, and Wells meets him halfway, stopping him to whisper something in his ear before patting him on the back and sending him my way.

“Rude to whisper!” I shout after Wells. He just waves his hand and leaves.

“Hey,” Rhett says once he’s next to me. His eyes drink me in, and that sweet smile he tends to reserve only for me is gracing his full lips.

“Hi.”

“Came by to see if you wanted to have dinner with me tonight.”

Butterflies explode in my stomach.

“Like a date?” I ask.

He chuckles. “Yeah, poppyseed. Like a date.”

“You taking me out for a night on the town, Rhett Black? Want me all to yourself?”

He takes my hand and pulls me up off the floor and right into his arms. His face is immediately hovering over mine as his hands grab onto my ass.

“I always want you all to myself, Poppy Sharpe.” He kisses me so hard I think I start to see stars.

“Well, alright, cowboy. All you had to do was ask.”

The kids arewith my parents until I get back, so I drive straight across the fields to her little house that’s tucked away against the tree line. She seems to really like it here. When she was staying with me, she was gushing about the style of the kitchen. Maybe if she moves in, she can put her own personal touch on my kitchen.

God knows it needs it. That whole house has fallen into a white-and-grey theme. I just don’t know how to put my own stamp on it, and Leah never cared to. Not that she was there long enough to do anything. It was finished being built right as Wade was born, and she left soon after.

“Hey, cowboy!”

Poppy’s voice breaks through my thoughts, and when I see her jog down the steps and out to my truck, my brain goes completely blank. Her hair is still vibrant, and she’s curled it into subtle waves. She’s wearing a sundress with those cowboy boots she bought recently. I hope she’s got thick socks on because those suckers are gonna tear her feet to bits if she doesn’t.

I jump out and run around the truck. A gentleman never lets a woman open her own door. One of those cute little eyebrows raises up as she eyes me.

“I can open my own door, you know.”

“I know, poppyseed. I’m just tryin’ to be nice.” She grins as I wait impatiently for her to get in. “Well?”
