“Aren’t you going to tell me I look nice?” She does a little twirl, making the hem of her dress fly up around the tops of her thighs.

I reach out and grab her, pulling her tight to my body as I kiss her hard. I’ve missed her today, and seein’ her all dressed up has my chest aching. She grunts but leans into me, opening her mouth as my tongue slips in. And then she’s grabbing the cowboy hat off my head and placing it on her own.

Fuck, she looks cute.

“Completes the look, right?” Her smile is wide, and the setting sun makes her eyes almost glow.

I lean in and kiss her cheek. “I’m gonna fuck you with nothin’ but those boots and my hat on later.”

“Promises, promises, Rhett Black.”

Before she can stop me, I grab her around the waist and lift her into the truck. She tries to hand my hat back to me, but I like it better on her. Plus, when people see her with me, they’re gonna know it’s mine. Which means they’ll know thatsheis mine. And while we haven’t fully confirmed that yet, I plan to tonight.

I take her to a little spot in town that’s half bar and half restaurant. We don’t have time to go next door to the bigger city, where there are much fancier places to eat. I want to give her the best, but I can’t leave the kids with Momma and Pops all night. If I want to have dinner, get her home and naked, and then pick up my kids before bedtime, we are gonna have to keep it short.

“This is so cute,” she says, smiling at everyone we walk past to get to our booth. She slides in first, and I take the side opposite. We put our drink orders in, and she immediately asks for an appetizer of fried pickles. She hadn’t even looked at the menu, but luckily, they have them here.

“Do you like it here, Poppy?”

She looks up from her Dr. Pepper with wide eyes and takes the hat off like she means business.

“By here, you mean Cane Creek? Or the restaurant?”

“Cane Creek. Well, both? I guess?”

God, I sound like an idiot. My nerves have my palms sweating and my mind racin’. I can barely focus on anything other than how fucking good she looks in that dress.

“I love it,” she says with a sigh, letting my muscles relax. “I came here because I wanted a change. I grew up in a small town, and ever since, I’ve just been hopping from one big city to another. Suddenly, I thought maybe I don’t feel settled because a big city isn’t where I’m supposed to be.”

She shrugs and sips from her straw.

“So, if we were to continue this,” I say, gesturing back and forth between us, “you wouldn’t feel like I was keeping you somewhere you didn’t want to be?”

Those pretty cheeks flush a dark pink, and she struggles to make eye contact. Now I’m really wishing I had sat next to her because I could grab that little chin and force her to look up at me.

“No, Rhett,” she finally says. “You wouldn’t be holding me hostage.”

The pickles come out, and we place the rest of our order. One good thing about living in a small town is the restaurant service is impeccably fast. She dips the little pickle chip in ranch, absolutely slathering it with the dressing, and then pops it in her mouth.

Iwill not let that turn me on. I will not let that turn me on.

“Poppy.” She looks up at me and smiles, waiting for me to continue. Jesus Christ, I’m in love with this woman. “I’d like to tell the kids.”

The biggest, sweetest smile spreads across her lips, and I almost reach across to kiss her.

“Yeah?” She tucks a piece of hair behind her ear.

“Yeah. What do you think?”

“Rhett, I would love that. I would love to tell them. If you’re sure you’re all ready for that.”

“I’ve watched you with them every day since you got here. They’re almost obsessed with you, and you treat them like your own. There’s nothing more I could ask for from a partner.” I take a deep breath, knowing that once we tell them, there’s no going back. That cat will be out of the bag, and we’ll have to deal with any consequences that come with it. “We should tell them.”

She squeals, slides out of her seat, and throws herself into mine. She wraps me in her arms and kisses me hard on the cheek. Now it’s my turn to blush because she just got everyone’s attention in this damn restaurant, and I have never been a fan of PDA.

“People are lookin’, woman.” I half-heartedly scold her and then kiss her back.
