“Aurora, are you alright?” Teo sounded more formal than usual, and I guessed that it had something to do with being in a stranger’s home, especially one who was also a don.

“Yes, I’m fine. I—”

Before I was able to continue on, Don Fabbri interrupted. “We just started dinner. Please, have a seat and I’ll have plates brought.”

“Thank you but we didn’t come for dinner. We’ve come to retrieve Aurora.”

“Nonsense. Sit.” Fabbri’s tone gave little room for argument.

Luca looked at Teo who nodded before taking the seat on the opposite end of the table while Fabbri called for two more dinner plates to be brought. While we waited uncomfortably for the servers, Don Fabbri looked curiously at Matteo.

“So, what business do you have with Ms. Ferro?”

“Domenico Romano kidnapped her, and we managed to track one of his men’s phones to this location. We’ve come to take her home.”

“Home?” Fabbri’s eyebrows lifted.

“Yes.”

Fabbri looked at me for a moment before speaking. “Were you kidnapped by those men?”

“Sì.”

“They told me that they were just bringing you to me.”

“They said that if I spoke before they left that they would shoot us both.” The servers brought plates of food and glasses of wine for Teo and Luca before disappearing again.

“They knew that if I had known that they took you against your will, none of them would have made it out of this house alive,” Fabbri’s temper rose as did the anger in his voice.

“So, you are not keeping her here against her will?” Teo said with some surprise.

“Of course not.”

“So, you will allow us to take her home without any resistance.”

“Only if that’s what she wants.” Fabbri looked at me again, searching for my response but there was just one question on my mind.

I turned to look at Teo. “Where’s Enzo?”

Just as the words left my mouth there was a loud commotion near the entryway. It sounded like a scuffle right there inside the house and I suddenly heard a familiar voice. “Get your hands off of me.”

“Enzo.” I jumped up from the table and rushed toward the foyer with my three dinner companions right behind me.

“What the hell is the meaning of this?” Fabbri barked and everyone froze.

“These men were caught sneaking around the property on the trail cameras just outside the wall. They were trying to find a way in.”

“Is that true?”

“Yes. Aurora, are you alright?” Enzo turned his attention from Fabbri to me.

“I’m okay, I’m fine. Really.” I turned to face Fabbri. “Can you let him go? He was only here to save me.”

“Who is this man to you?” Fabbri asked as he studied Enzo and my reaction to him.

“He’s my fiancé,” I answered confidently.

“You’re fiancé? Well then of course, release him.” He nodded to the guards to let both Enzo and Alessandro free. “We need to have a drink and talk.”
