"No." Teo turned back to look at me. "It would look best if I went to speak one don to another."

I cast him a pleading look. "I can't lose her."

"We're going to figure out a way to get her back. Just keep your wits about you and don't act out of emotion. Think things through."

"I can do that."

"Good."

We continued our trip until we got to a turn off that would eventually lead to Don Fabbri's mansion.

Alessandro pulled over to the side of the road and looked at Teo. “Are you sure that you should go in alone? I still think they'll find it suspicious if you don't know at least have one of us with you.”

“He might have a point there. What don would just go all by himself even for a diplomatic visit.”

“Okay, but it shouldn't be my underboss. That's too great a show of power. I'll have Luca go with me. Alessandro and Enzo, you go around back and whatever you do, don't get caught.”

“Maybe I should go in with you,” I added. “What if he has Aurora?”

“If he has Aurora then your reaction may spark suspicion or even conflict that could get her hurt. You're too close to this. It's better for you to go through the back to offer us help if we need it.”

I nodded reluctantly. Alessandro and I climbed out of the car and watched as Teo and Luca drove farther down the path. The map had shown that the road would lead to a security gate that was the main entrance into the property. Alessandro and I would have our hands full trying to find another way into the very secure property. But every stronghold had its weakness, and we would find theirs.

We hiked through the wooded area off from the winding drive for a while, working our way to the back of the compound.

"Alessandro," I called out to him in a loud whisper as we neared the back corner of the property.

He turned to look at me and I pointed to a large tree with overgrown branches. There were several just like it surrounding the Fabbri compound, but that particular tree’s branches were very close to the wall that kept us from Aurora. He nodded his understanding and we continued to stealthily make our way in that direction, careful to stay in the shadows of the trees.

*Aurora*

I fidgeted in my chair at the dining room table as servers brought out the second course. Don Fabbri sat at the head of the table with me to his right. There were enough places to seat twenty, but all the rest were empty.

“Do you have a lot of dinner parties?” I asked, trying to make casual conversation.

Don Fabbri looked puzzled by my question. “Not really. Why do you ask?”

“With such a grand dining room, I thought you might.”

“My wife. She loved dinner parties, but I haven’t really had the need for them.”

“I see. Will your wife be joining us or...”

“No. She passed away last year just before our seventh anniversary.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” The small talk was painfully uncomfortable, and I struggled to know what to say to a man I’d only just met.

“Thank you.” There was a long awkward silence before one of Fabbri’s men came in and whispered something to him. Fabbri’s brow lifted with intrigue, and he looked at me. “It seems you have guests.”

“Me?” I said, completely shocked. Why would I be having visitors here? No one but Romano’s men know where I am.

Fabbri nodded. “Apparently you have friends in high places. Don Matteo Venturi and one of his men are here to see you.”

“Matteo—one of his men? Enzo?”

“My guard didn’t say the other man’s name but he’s escorting them both in so we will find out soon enough.”

I waited anxiously until Teo and Luca walked into the dining room. “Teo, Luca,” I exclaimed and nearly jumped out of my seat.
