I donotfeel my eyes sting at this, and I donotsniffle loudly. It’s just the dust in the room.

“And if you feel this way about someone, I’d like to know. I’d like to be a part of your life. The only things I know about you are ones that I observe or ones that I’m told.”

I clear my throat. “You won’t murder him?”

“No.”

“Well, it doesn’t matter. It was nothing,” I choke out. “And I’m sure once he wakes up and sees that his mother and sister are here, he’ll be pissed at me.”

He runs a hand across his jaw. “Hm, we’ll see.”

“I don’t know…I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know what we’re doing sitting in here chatting. It’s fucking weird, Dad.”

“Yeah,” he says with a smile. “Will take some getting used to.”

“Used to?”

“I’d like to do this more often. Get to know you better.”

I sip my drink again, letting silence sit between us.

“Yeah. Okay. We’ll see.”

He nods at me and drains his drink, standing up slowly.

“Think that’s enough for today?”

I sigh and nod. “Yeah, thank fuck. I couldn’t do another minute.”

He chuckles as I move past him, wanting so badly to just go back to Skylar, but not wanting to interrupt.

“I’ll have you informed when his mother and sister retire for the night. Then you can go check on…your bodyguard.”

“Yeah,” I say with a soft smile, diverting my steps and moving toward Angel’s room. I need to process this. It was too fucking weird. I can’t sit with this alone, wondering if I’ve gone completely crazy.

Did I just imagine that?

“’Night,” I say, and my dad just nods, moving back into his office and closing the door with a snick.

Well, that was fucking weird.

And yet, I fucking liked it.

DIABLO

Much later, I end up back in Skylar’s bed, my body tucked against his. His mom and sister didn’t leave for a long-ass while. It was only when my father entered my room at three in the morning that I knew it was time for me to go be with him.

And I was. I crawled in next to him and poked at his side, hoping I could nag him awake. It didn’t work. That monitor continued on beeping steadily, signaling he was alive but not really with me.

I press my nose into his side and then bite down on his skin, not enough to leave a bruise, but hoping beyond hope that he’ll wake up. But he doesn’t. Nothing I do to wake him works, so I just close my eyes and let myself be lulled back to sleep.

The next day is the same and so is the one after that. I’m starting to grow desperate, angry. I shout at Doc when he comes for his rounds to check on him, telling him that he’s a dead man and making a scene. I even turn over a table, making Doc just arch an eyebrow at me.

My tantrum ends with me heaving in a corner, wishing Skylar was there to spank some sense into me.

But he’s not. He’s still asleep. Here but not.
