Skylar’s mother and sister look slightly mortified at my behavior, but I don’t care. I’ve lost my fucking mind. There’s obviously something someone can do, right? He won’t stay this way forever? Right?!

I need some space so I find myself in one of my dad’s sheds, giving myself time to breathe. It smells like death in here despite the air fresheners hanging from the ceiling. Ridiculous is what this is. It’s like spraying Febreze after a big shit.

It just smells like floral death.

I grab on to one of my saws and begin the process of destruction, cutting up a large bookshelf one of my dad’s men dragged in here for me. He’d offered me a corpse, but after dismembering Elio, I decided I’d rather go to town on some wood.

I don’t want to make a bad impression on Skylar’s family. Telling Doc that I was going to slowly scoop out his eyeballs and put them in an ice cream cone was bad enough.

I should have told him I’d top him with a cherry and sprinkles. Might have made it more of a joke. Not that they would laugh.

This isn’t fucking funny. This whole thing is just fucking sad.

I’m halfway through dismembering a shelf when the door opens and Casey walks in. He doesn’t even blink at the mess I’ve made, just leans against the wall and crosses his arms.

“Hey, little boss man. Someone’s here to see you,” he drawls.

I shut off my saw and push my goggles up on my head.

“Who is it?”

“A guy named Lex?”

I sigh dramatically even though my lips tick up. He rarely visits me. Usually I go to him.

“What a nuisance,” I say loudly when I see Lex surveying the living room Casey put him in. He looks suspicious as he always does. He’s probably already hidden some cameras in here when the guards weren’t looking. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.

“Ah, Diablo-poo, nice to see you, Squirt.”

I narrow my eyes at him and glower. “You want to die?”

“Heavens no. Don’t kill me yet. I have much to do before I make my entrance to hell.”

My lips curl up, and I fold my arms across my chest. “What do you want?”

“Well, Emery told me that he heard a bit of gossip, and I wanted to make sure you were okay…”

I scoff. “Emery needs to keep his mouth shut.”

“Yes, well I’ve tried to convince him to keep it inside. But he can’t help but blurt it all out.”

I roll my lips between my teeth and nod, trying to look intimidating, but not managing. Emery is his own breed. There is no keeping words inside of him. He just vomits them out whenever he can. If he has an audience, they seem to tumble out faster.

“Never tell Emery a secret,” Lex says, and I nod.

“Yes, well, I don’t know how he heard. Maybe from Angel. I know the two of them talk sometimes,” I say.

Lex shrugs. “Probably. Anyways. I wanted to see if you wanted to…hang out?”

I stare at him. “We don’t hang out. That’s not what we do. What we have is a business transaction.”

And anyways, I don’t want to leave, not when Skylar is still unresponsive upstairs. I need to go to him, to stare at him, to nag him awake.

Fuck, but his mom and sister are still here.

“Fine. Then I’ll hang out here with you. William’s working late tonight so I’m free. Want to do something crazy?”

“Six-way apocalypse?”
