I don’t like knowing that there’s a man out there that might want to cause harm to Kennedy. It doesn’t sit well with me that she could be in danger.

Isn’t that the point of the new security system? Because there’s always going to be evil, and you’re not always going to be around to stop it.

I shake my head to dislodge the thought, and watch Kennedy work. It takes her a few minutes to settle back into a routine, but by the end of her shift, she’s her normal happy self.

Ten minutes before closing, Little Man and Jenny stroll in, and Jenny goes straight for Kennedy while the prospect comes to me.

“Bitch is taken care of,” he says.

I nod my appreciation. “Who filled in for me at the gate?”

“Snow was there when I left. I filled him in on what went down, and he thinks Kennedy should stay at the compound for a while.”

“Yeah, I’ve already thought about that.” I thrust a hand through my hair. “You still wanting to go to the diner?”

“Sure, if the girls are up for it?”

“If we’re up for what?” Kennedy asks, leaning on the bar.

“There’s a diner across town,” I say. “You ladies hungry?”

Jenny looks at Little Man and grins. “I could eat… again.”

“Oh, man, too much info,” I complain.

Little Man just chuckles and shakes his head. “Just because you’re not—”

“I’m gonna stop you right there, prospect,” I snap, smacking him upside the head.

“Yep, got it.”

“Do what ya gotta do to close this place down, and let’s get outta here,” I say.

While I help Kennedy and Jenny clean up, Little Man works to get the last two remaining customers outside and into cabs, both too drunk to drive.

Thirty minutes later, we’re all sliding into a booth at the diner.

“So, what’s good here?” Kennedy asks, looking at the menu.

“Everything,” Little Man says.

“I’m gonna have a burger and fries, with a chocolate milkshake,” Jenny expresses.

“Dip, what are you having?” Kennedy leans against me, so I wrap an arm around her shoulders.

“Short stack of pancakes, bacon, sausage, a couple fried eggs, and chocolate milk.”

“Seriously?”

“I’m fucking hungry.”

“You must be.” She giggles. “I don’t think I’ve seen you eat that much before.”

“That’s because he’s too busy feeding on you,” Jenny teases.

Kennedy’s eyes go wide, and her face flushes. Little Man snickers, Jenny laughs, and I pull back to stare at my girl incredulously.

“Did you…” I grin. “Do you talk about us?”
