I clear my throat for maybe the fiftieth time already. It does nothing to help me breathe any easier or think any clearer. “And your ability?”

This is crazy, Saige. Why are you asking when you should be running?

“I have the enviable ability to make her scream.”

“How?” My question is so soft and breathy that it’s a wonder he hears me at all.

His smile darkens. “Several ways. Pinning her against a door is always a favorite.”

My belly tightens with memory. “Of hers or yours?”

He raises an eyebrow. “You tell me.”

Mine. Definitely a favorite of mine.

“And Dariel,” I ask, though I have no idea why I care. “Just out of curiosity, what’s his skill?”

“Dariel?” Kade murmurs, his expression impossible to read. “He’s the one women fall in love with.”

I snort. “Forgive me if I don’t believe you.”

He searches my face before turning away. “Aden, I think Saige would—”

“No!” My blurted word makes his face freeze the second before he lowers his gaze back to mine.

“You want this.”

There’s not a hint of doubt in his voice, and he’s right. I do. But just because I want something, doesn’t mean it should happen.

“I can’t stay here.”

“Because of the shifter from the bar,” Aden guesses.

I dart a glance at him before inching away from Kade. Having his hands on me is making it impossible to think.

To my surprise, he doesn’t stop me or try to hold on to me. It’s as if he knows I need distance to talk about something I’d rather not talk about at all. “It isn’t safe for you if I stay. The idea of us, or this… is a fantasy. It can never happen.”

Silence.

My gaze settles on my lap. “Someone was hurt.” I swallow hard. “Killedbecause he tried to help me. I can’t let the same thing happen again.”

“Human or shifter?” Kade asks.

I remember Simon’s smile, the blood on the parking lot, and his dead stare. “Human.”

“I’m a shifter. I’ll hunt him, kill him, and you’ll—”

“Nathan isn’t the only one,” I interrupt. “He’s just the hunter.”

“Someone set him after you,” Aden murmurs. “The person who hurt you.”

Nathan hurt me too, but he wouldn’t have if Rylan hadn’t given me to him. Or toanyof them. So it all goes back to him. After a moment, I nod.

“Who?” Kade demands.

I shake my head. “This has nothing to do with you.”

“You’re wrong,” Aden says. “It does. But I think I can guess.”
