“You have such a way with words.” My tone is dry.

“The ladies seem to like it.”

A toilet flushes, and I listen to the sound of running water, waiting for it to finish. “Could she be wrong about the mate thing?”

I’ve never heard of a shifter having a human mate, but it could just be that Dariel never mentioned it to me.

He straightens from his lean. “Maybe, but it doesn’t matter if she is.”

My eyes track him as he strides toward the kitchen door. “Why not?”

He pauses at the doorway, his expression inscrutable. “I saw the scars on her body. Someone restrained her, just like you said, but not for months. Years. Mate bond or not, that speaks of obsession, and it all points to the same thing.”

“What’s that?”

“This guy that wants her?”

“What about him?”

Something dark flashes across Kade’s eyes. “The only way he stops looking for her is if he’s dead. Come on, Saige is proving to be more of a handful than Mona ever was.”

Frowning, I follow. “Why? What’s—”

A wolf roars.

Kade leaves me behind.Farbehind, as he sprints down the hallway.

I follow, past a bathroom door standing wide open and to an apartment front door the same way. It isn’t hard to work out what happened, or why.

39

SAIGE

Regret is a foul taste in my mouth as I fumble with the lock on the bar front door.

Jerking my head around, my eyes clash with Dariel’s green stare as he sprints toward me. Another growl rumbles up his throat, the sound so visceral I feel it brush against my chest. I hadn’t believed he would take one look at me and shift, even after what I’d heard him shout before.

If I’d known that would be his response, I wouldn’t have left the bathroom.

I finally get the door open, just as a familiar white wolf smashes into Dariel and they both go down.

Kade.

I hesitate.

The memory of Simon’s dead body flashes in my mind. If I stay, someonewilldie. Maybe it won’t be Kade, but it could just as easily be Aden’s dead eyes staring into mine.

Spinning back around, I tear the door the rest of the way open and sprint out of it.

The ground is cold and hard beneath my bare feet, and the long sleeve sweatshirt I grabbed from the bar manager’s closet flaps up with every step I take, flashing bare thighs to everyone around me. Ignoring the stares I’m attracting from the people dressed in smart office wear, who are probably on their way to work, I sprint on.

If I could’ve dressed in the long sleeve shirt and sweatpants that I wore the day before, I would have. But I found them laying in a soggy heap beside the shower after me and Kade…

Don’t think of that now, Saige. Now is not the time to be distracted.

I’d have hunted around for a pair of pants in the bar manager’s closet, but there was no time. Not when the creak of a floorboard in the kitchen warned me that either Kade or Aden was soon about to leave it.

“Saige!”
