I press my back harder against the table.

Trapped.

What do I do? Is he one of Rylan’s pack I never met? Or is Nathan here because Kade called him and told him that I was here?

His nose twitches, the only part of him that moves, but I whimper as if he’s just pulled a knife.

His hand tightens around his glass.

I tense.

Is he going to throw it at me and, once he’s knocked me out, carry me back to Rylan?

I brace myself for him to do it.

And then the soft tread of footsteps moving toward me is like nothing I’ve ever known before. I thought I was terrified before, but now?

There’s only one person who would be prowling toward me. Every nerve in my body stretches tight enough to snap because my body knows who it is.

Nathan.

Another whimper slips free. His lips tighten.

I know I should get up. Run. But every part of me is shaking so hard I couldn’t move even if I tried.

Kade pushes himself to his feet.

Free of his probing stare, I get my hands beneath me, ready to make a run for it.

But suddenly, Kade is stalking past me as if I’m not even there.

What?

Why isn’t he grabbing me …?

An almighty crash rings out. Someone grunts. The music stops. A woman’s scream punctures this new tense silence.

I press myself against the table at my back and squeeze my eyes shut, counting my frantic heartbeats until Nathan comes and steals me away, back to a life that will kill me.

Kade hurls his glass of whiskey at a guy’s head. The guy dodges the glass, but not the table Kade follows it up with.

“What thefuck?” Aden breathes, likely staring at the monitor on my wall with the same level of mounting disbelief that I am.

In the next second, they’re on each other. Tables go down, customers leap from their seats and sprint for the exit.

I’m pounding down the stairs a beat later, Aden close behind.

The reason Kade would decide to launch a blistering attack on a customer from out of fucking nowhere soon becomes apparent when I burst into the bar and get my first sniff of him.

Shifter.

And a fighter. A good one.

They’re pretty evenly matched, Kade and this dark-haired shifter who counters punches and kicks with the silent focus of one used to fighting often. And winning.
