“Thank you.” I suck in a breath and walk into the club, arriving before Embry does. The bartender has already poured me a glass of water with lime before she Embry with Lucianna in tow. I may want to drown my sorrows in a fish bowel of margaritas, but if I’m going to be any help to the mission, it’s ice water for me.

She reaches up and gives me a hug. “I hope you don’t mind that I brought Lucianna. If you’ve got man troubles, she can help. There’s no better set of ears than hers; believe me, I know. Plus, Overmaster Descallia’s still working tonight.”

A spiky haired blonde vampire in a suit walks by, and his eyes sweep over Embry’s pale pink sweater, short skirt, and long bare legs right down to her shorty boots as she stands next to me by the bar.

Lucianna’s eyes go wide. “Good thing Lucas isn’t here or there would be a showdown tonight,” she whispers as we make our way to the table reserved for Overmaster Descallia. Awaitress sees us walking toward it and meets us at the table, starts to take our order and get us settled in.

A man at the next table raises his voice, slurring over the music. “Hey, honey, where’s my drink?”

The waitress turns toward the mouthy asshole. “Excuse me for one minute,” she tells us, turning toward the drunken idiot as the tall male staggers toward our table. She meets him before he reaches the table and says something to the man that causes his face to go red.

“Ballsy girl,” I say.

Embry nods. “She’s been with the club for years. She knows how to handle herself, but just in case things get out of hand, you see that guy standing there?” Her eyes gesture to the tall bald muscly man with dark eyes who has them glued to the table. He’ll step in.”

I nod. “Embry told me the employees are well taken care of here at the Descallia,” I tell Lucianna, but we had a similar situation the other night too.

Lucianna nods. “They are, and we did. Lucas just changed the guest policy, but it doesn’t go into effect until the first of the month. No more unscreened guests. We never had unruly and disrespectful patrons until they started allowing anyone to give out gift passes. The club will go back to its prior exclusivity status, and by the time you start working here, I can guarantee this stuff will no longer happen.”

“Good to know,” I tell her, thankful to hear that it’s still in the plans for me to work at the club when all of this is finished.

The bar is dimly lit with a pulsing, seductive techno beat playing from the equipment on stage. Embry nudges Lucianna with her elbow and gestures with her eyes to the door where two tall dark-haired vampires stand. “I’d say those are the same two that we saw earlier. Overmaster Descallia?” she asks Lucianna.

Lucianna’s eyes take them in and then dramatically roll. I look from one to the other. “Something I’m missing?” I ask.

Lucianna laughs. “I'm sure those are Descallia’s goons. They switch off all the time to throw me and anyone watching off, but these men aren’t even trying to hide the fact that they are here for one reason only—to keep eyes on me and Embry.”

The vampire chick who accosted me in the bathroom spots us as she comes off the dance floor. Her eyes go red, and she stops mid stride on her way to the bar, pivoting on her spiky purple heels that must be at least four inches high. Her bare boobs jiggle as she stalks toward us. “Sierra will blow off some steam and then leave. If she doesn’t, I’ll put the bitch in her place,” Embry says, seeing her at the same time that I do.

Sierra reaches the table and looks down at all three of us, but her eyes home in on mine. "Where's the mighty vampire master tonight? Got tired of you already?”

“I’m not looking for trouble. I’m just out with friends.”

She looks down at my hiking boots, jeans, and long sleeve t-shirt and rolls her eyes. I may not be out for trouble, but I think she is. “I'm not quite sure what Calabrea ever saw in you in the first place. Men, no matter human or vampire, they’re always the same. They like a little variety in the bedroom, but he's going to grow tired. You can't give him what he needs, what he craves at night when the moon shines the full glory of its power down on the world. He needs someone who can be in that moment with him, and you are never going to be able to fill that need. He’ll be back in my bed in no time at all, human.”

I inhale deeply, doing my best not to react.

She gives me a bright smile as I try to keep my face straight, the tears stinging the back of my eyes. “Go be a skank somewhere else,” Embry says, her eyes flashing bright purple.

The skank’s eyes flash red. “Consider yourselves lucky I don't run through you right here and now," she says, spinning on her heels.

I watch as she makes her way back to the vampire who escorted her from the dance floor. He laughs at something she says and wraps his hand around her waist, drawing her to him before guiding her to one of the blood red couches set up among the lounge. He says something, and she pulls away, her eyes flashing and turning into a solid flaming red.

Our waitress returns. “Nice job with the mouthy patron. Soon, no one will need to deal with this. I promise,” Lucianna tells her.

The woman’s cheeks flush. “He’s harmless enough, but some people just can’t hold their booze. What will you ladies have this evening?” she says. Embry is still perusing the menu. “Can we get three…"

"Waters," Lucianna says to the waitress and smirks at Embry. "We might have work to do tonight. I told you Overmaster is working, and that means that everyone sleeping may not be sleeping shortly.”

Embry’s eyes flash purple. “Kill joy!”

Lucianna laughs and then turns to me. “Overmaster Descallia and Lucas are planning to meet with Master Calabrea, Angel, and Trentino at Calabrea’s estate. We thought you were with him?”

I nod. “I was, and then I left. Long story, but chalk it up to the fact that, I don’t know. We live in different worlds, and eventually it’s going to cause a divide in our relationship that we’ll never be able to cross. It seems every relationship I have destiny is bound to deny.”

My cousin kicks my shin with her shorty boot underneath the table, causing me to wince. “Seems like you’re creating it with no help from destiny or the gods above all by yourself,” Embry says.

My mouth gapes.
