“No, you can’t wear this dress into the Aboa.”

I scowled at him and tried to take it anyway, but he tossed the fabric over his shoulder.

“Why the hell not?” I signed back angrily.

“Because a group of my guards are going, and I don’t want them seeing what’s mine.” His motions were harsh.

“I amnotyours.”

His eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer to me.

I took a step closer to him, too.

There was still way too much space between us, but neither of us made another move to cover it.

“You said the vows,” he signed.

“So did you. Does that make you mine?” I signed back.

“In every fucking way.” His chest rumbled.

“Then why didn’t you tell me about your instincts? They should be mine too.” My frustration was growing. “And why haven’t I seen you all week? All month, really. Why are you pretending I don’t exist?”

He took another two steps closer to me, so there was only a foot between us. “You live in every one of my thoughts,” he signed. “You’re in my mind constantly. I know you don’t want more than what we have, so I’ve left space between us. The last thing I want is to make you uncomfortable, Cier, but my self-control is fading. I can no longer be your friend without losing myself to my nature.”

“And whatisyour nature?” I countered, still signing.

“To touch you, everywhere. Taste your desire. To wear the scent of your pleasure on my skin, in my hair, on my cock.”

My entire body flushed. “And you didn’t think I deserved to know that? You said you only wanted friendship, too.”

“I had no way to speak to you. Courting you would’ve been foolish.”

“We’ve been able to communicate for months now,” I shot back, my hands moving more harshly than his.

“And my instincts have been pushing me even longer.” His chest rumbled unhappily, and he added, “I’m doing the best I can, Cier. As I have been doing since we met. If you know a better way, please, enlighten me. I couldn’t act on my desires before, and I certainly can’t now.”

“How do we deal with your nature, then? What would calm it, or at least delay it long enough for us to make a decision of some kind?” I signed back.

He scowled, and I narrowed my eyes at him, waiting.

He finally signed back, “Satisfying you is the only way to appease the instincts. They demand intimacy of some kind.”

Oh.

Heat bloomed on my face.

“Okay,” I finally signed back. “When we’re out of the Aboa, we can… do that.”

He blinked at me.

And then blinked again.

He signed, “Just like that?”

“Well I can’t exactly hook up with any of the other fae, can I?”

His expression went from calm and upbeat to full of fury in a heartbeat, and he signed back harshly, “No fucking chance.”
