“What? No way! I have barely any magic, so it’s not remotely possible. And even if I could—which I can’t—there’s no way I would do that.”

He glowered at me, then jerked me to my feet by my hair and stormed toward the castle. I struggled to keep up with him, being yanked along as I protested the treatment. Just the fact that he was touching me didn’t bode well for his survival, but I was too worried about making him angrier to say that.

“The king will punish you for this, mate or not,” the guard told me.

I resisted the urge to reply,“At least I’ll get to see the bastard for the first time all week.”

Instead, I kept my mouth shut and let the asshole drag me to my mate, trying to figure out if there was actually a chance I might have woken the Mother of all Monsters somehow.

The throne roomwas in complete chaos when we reached it.

There were people everywhere. Some were yelling, and I could tell the yells were directed at the king, who couldn’t hear any of them.

He was deaf but he could hear me when I spoke, no matter the distance between us, because we were mates. And he had to be paying attention to hear me.

He seemed to have become a professional at ignoring me over the past few months. The closer I was to him, the harder it was to do that, though.

Knowing that if I spoke, he would probably hear me, I kept my mouth shut in the throne room.

No need to intensify the existing hatred the water fae already had for me. Giving them another reason to despise me was definitely not high on my priority list, or part of my plan.

The guard holding me shouted, “I brought the earth fae responsible for waking the Mother!”

There went my plan to stay on the down-low.

Heads turned toward me, glaring at me like I was the source of all their problems.

I still couldn’t see Zoran, though. He’d be at the front of the group, sitting on his throne. It was set up at the top of a few stairs to give him a better view of the room, but all the fae men were stupidly tall, for whatever strange biological reason. Their height made them too difficult for me to see past.

The air grew thick with water, the humidity a sign that my king was using his magic to feel out the room.

To feel outme.

Which wasn’t nearly as sexual as I would’ve liked it to be, but there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about that.

The humidity thickened so severely that breathing became difficult for a moment, and then the water in the air cut through the crowd, shoving fae to both sides and making a clear path from me to the throne.

Zoran was already storming toward me when my eyes met his, and there was fury in his gaze.

My heart dropped into my stomach.

The guard holding me let go, quickly.

Zoran wouldn’t seriously believe I could wake up the Mother, would he?

My hands moved quickly, but a bit clumsily, as I signed to him, “I didn’t release the monster.” Though he could hear me when I spoke, I had been focusing on learning to sign for so long that it felt important to communicate that way.

Zoran ignored me. His eyes met those of the guard behind me as he covered the distance between us, and he signed one harsh word. “Move.”

The guard took a few rough steps back just before the king reached us.

He grabbed me by the arms, his grip firm but not painful as he spun me around. I felt warm water and hands drag over my back, and then remembered the knife earlier.

Shit.

Zoran’s fingers moved over the healed skin where the cut had been, and the water in the air thickened again as he turned me around.

The signs he made were sharp with anger as he asked me, “Who hurt you?”
