I signed back, “I’m fine.”

Fury heated his eyes, and I heard a few people choking behind us. The air was getting really, really thick.

That happened when he got pissed, but he rarely got pissed. Zoran was one of the most level-headed people I’d ever met.

He signed the words, “Tell me.”

I shook my head at him and signed back, “I’m fine.”

He snarled at me, spinning to the guard beside me and signing, “Who hurt my Cier?”

The nickname he’d given me was pronounced see-air, and was the name of some kind of rare, extremely expensive, delicious fruit. It always made my face red when he called me that, because he was basically calling me rare, expensive, and delicious.

I looked at the guard.

He looked at me, and I could see the fear in his eyes.

I didn’t feel bad for him, because he’d been an absolute dick to me, but I didn’t want him to die.

Zoran rarely got angry, but when he did… you did not want to be on the receiving end of that anger. He’d never hurt me, even at his angriest, though.

I’d only pissed him off once, and it was when we were in the Aboa together. I’d tried to get away from him and nearly gotten eaten by a monster. He’d been so furious with me that he literally tied me to his side with some plants that grew in the water.

When he’d gone insane again because of the intensity of his magic, I couldn’t figure out how to untie the knots he’d made. We’d ended up literally tied together for two entire weeks.

I’d only seen him angry once since he’d become sane again, and it had been when one of the water fae said I would be the end of their kingdom. He’d put a knife to my throat… and had lost his head very, very quickly.

Something told me the guard who had legitimately hurt me would lose his even faster if I didn’t lie for him.

“I fell,” I blurted aloud.

I’d always been a shitty liar.

The glower Zoran gave me told me that was still very much true.

My king signed a harsh word I didn’t recognize, and I looked at the guard for a translation.

“Bullshit,” someone off to my side told me quietly.

I had no idea how the guard could’ve ever thought the situation would happen any differently, but I had to own my lie now. Or at least distract Zoran.

“I didn’t wake Heliai up,” I said quickly, changing the subject. “My magic is nowhere near strong enough for that. I don’t know who did, but it wasn’t me.”

“Of course you didn’t,” Zoran signed back, still glaring at me. “Other than me, the only one strong enough in the kingdom to do so is Crest.”

Crest was Zoran’s brother. He was mated to Locha, who I lovingly referred to as thequeen bitchin my head.

“He and Locha left sometime last night. Transported away,” Zoran signed.

“Oh, shit,” I whispered.

“Tell me who hurt you, female,” my king signed to me.

He’d realized I was changing the subject on purpose, dammit.

“We need to go after them,” someone called out from behind Zoran. “Convince the king, earth fae.”

Ihatedit when they called me “earth fae” like it was my name.
